Ok.. I had problems with my windows xp install on drive E and then i was missing a file for ide drivers for nforce mobo. I had no clue how to fix this as my pc wouldn't boot up. So at first I attempted to do a repair install thinking that'd help. Well I couldn't even get that to fully work because of some cdrom detection errors, but was later able to do a fresh install on another partition without any errors. So I decided to use this second install to find a way to fix my original install somehow. I found 2 tutorials about this:

Now.. it seems like the first one.. where you load some .reg file will work.. But I have 2 problems. First of all if I load a hive and work on that new key, will double clicking .reg files enter information to the hive thats loaded or to the OS i'm actually in? Another problem, I still have a xp repair install that supposingly isn't done. How would I get it to get out of that? I tried doing the repair install but wouldn't work so how could I backtrack to having just the bootup error for the ide drivers?

One more problem is.. my drive letters were.. D: for second OS install.. and E: for original OS install. But after I did the second OS install on D:.. my cdrom became E: and my original install drive became F:. How do I switch this back?

K, sorry about the length of this post. Been struggling with this problem for almost 2 weeks. And yes I know I could do a fresh install but I really want my old registry settings
