Hello,
When I bought my dell 4700, it did not come with the OS reinstall discs. Instead they put the OS recovery on a serparate partition on the hard drive. I would like to get this put on to cds because I heard when you do a OS reinstall, this gets erased. How do I do this? What programs do I use. Thanks

There should be some software already installed for making recovery CDS. Look on the Start menu>All Programs>Dell Accessories.

The only way that partition will get deleted is if you repartition the drive using a retail XP installation CD. If you use that partition to reinstall XP, it will not erase itself.

I do recommend you make the recovery CDs, though. If the harddrive ever fails, you'll have to either buy another copy of XP or try to get Dell to send you the disks...which may or may not be free but will surely cost at least shipping and handling.

I can restore up to the 1st window after the rebbot just after i got the service tag -

I have a _ at the upper left corner of the screen and it sits there for hours.

I have a partition in ntfs, not in fat32. is it an issue ?

reformating in fat32 wont help ?
