Angry Solved: Taskbar acting up
You know those little vertical dividers in the taskbar? Normally, there are juste a couple, no? Right now, I have exactly 17...!!! And it seems as if every time I turn my computer on, there are more. And sometimes, when I open a program, it appears in more than one section in the taskbar. It's quite annoying...

I've been trying to solve this myself and I found a site on the web:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Item 117 on this list does the trick... except that when I turn my laptop off and on again, the problem returns.

Anyone have any ideas...???

I am guessing that you mean 'minimized' windows (they look like buttons). The one designating the active window looks like it is pushed in, and the others look like they are not. If that is the case, you have a lot of different programs running. If you right-click one, there should be a pop-up menu that includes CLOSE as well as things like Minimize, Maximize, Restore, etc. All of these should get closed when you turn-off your Computer, unless you are going into Standby instead of powering down. If you are using Standby (or possibly Hibernate) then none of your windows ever gets closed, and more keep showing up each time you open a new window (or start a program). If a program is already running and you start it again, you can have several instances of it running at once, and would see it more than once in the taskbar. Try right-clicking each minimized window, and then left-click CLOSE. It should vanish from the taskbar. You might want to look at power options in control panel to see if you are actually turning power off or hibernating, or using standby.

Hi Dark_star

Did you have any spyware programs running when you merged the file with Registry?
If so, try disabling those programs before merging the file with the Registry as they may be preventing changes to the Registry.

What, if any, spyware programs do you have running?
What anti-virus program are you using?

Good morning!

No, they are not minimized buttons. No programs are open. And when I right click, all I get is the drop-down menu for the taskbar.

And they really are the little vertical dividers (you know, the ones you have right after the quick launch icons and again before the language bar.

I just tried right clicking and selected tool bars... turns out I had 12 instances of language bar activated (checked)...

I removed them and solved part of the problem (I still have a couple of dividers too many)... but I dont know what will happen when I reboot.

And to answer your question, I might, once in a while, go into sleep mode, but mostly, I shut down my laptop.

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/...tpmod;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit Edit then Paste
You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You will have to wait for the HJT team member to diagnose your log file. I am just trying to cover all the bases and this is just one of them.

For one thing it shows no firewall, you might be using the Windows Firewall and really should be using another firewall that is two way, There is a site for free or free to try firewalls I suggest getting one and please wait until the log file is fixed.

But how will they know to look here to diagnose the log? Don't they monitor the security forum only? I'm sorry, I don't know how this works...

hmm, if you unlock the taskbar, you should be able to move those bars. if you drag them off the taskbar, it will become a window and can be deleted. one of them looks like a keyboard thing which may or may not have some extra options if you right click it, such as start on startup or something.
but if you have 12 language bars as you said then there must be a problem somewhere such as a virus or spyware.

Oh, I can fix it alright... but when I turn off my laptop and turn it back on, the problem returns... :-(

So, if it's a virus or spyware, I wish someone would look at the HJT log...
