Bah, to lazy to read all that, but yes, Norton is most likely the cause. It is a huge resource muncher. When I first got my current PC, I installed Norton Systemworks to see if it really does slow down the computer, and it took a good 30-40 seconds longer to start up after logon.

I recommend Kaspersky Antivirus, not as much of a resource hog.

because it's only an av program.

nav isn't the hog, it's the security or system works that pigs it up.

you have a lot of things running and that will slow stuff up

How much ram do you have?

have you done any of the general stuff to address slowdowns such as defragging, disc cleanup, running anti spyware??

I prefer to run AVG

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...ml?tag=lst-0-2

I find that it runs very nicely, its free and it is not a resource hog

I have 512 mb of ram and i would like learn more about other types of antivirus software. Does AVG scan files you want it to check?? If so i would prefer to have a faster pc than to run Norton. Also i would want to know how to take Norton out of my pc completely. Thank s everyone for the help.

Yes, AVG can scan files you want it to check. It also has a autoprotect feature like norton. It is a complete antivirus

Can you confirm exactly what Symantec product you installed?

In your first post you mention "Norton Security", so is this "Norton Internet Security"?

If so, and you installed everything, this covers substantially more than "just" an antivirus and is not replaceable by Kaspersky or Avg.

Go Run,msconfig,ok,startup and uncheck everything except for:
[ccApp]
[ANIWZCS2Service]
[WinPatrol]
This only if you use Aol dialup:
[AOLDialer]
You have the largest amount of unnecessary programs running in startup, I have ever seen and that is why you are running so slow unles syou have 3 gig of ram.

I would not touch Norton it slows down the machine and wrse it does not catch all the viruses. I run Kasperesky Internet Security which incorporates a firewall and an anti spam package. I have to say I find it brillant. Both myself and my friends who used norton in the past found we were heavily infected when we made the changover from Norton.

That is put in by Dlink wireless and probably is necessary.
Avg is fine for an experienced user but if you want protection and seamless operation, www.nod32.com is for you. kaspersky is also really effective but not so seamless as scans take forever and it can be a "bear" with updates.
