Suddenly, anything (either icon or empty space) that I click on my desktop just causes a beeping sound and nothing else. although, I can still access anything on my office shortcut bar and anything from the start bar along the bottom. I don't even know how to tackle this issue. I've rebooted several times and did a system restore to an earlier system checkpoint from today and when it rebooted, it just reversed itself - beeping when clicking on the start bar area and allowing desktop icons to be used. I've rebooted yet again, and it reverted back to the original problem.

any ideas?

Uh, have you scanned for viruses?

not a great one at diagnostics but beeping sometimes is a heat issue as i recall. have you opened up the computer (with power turned off obviously) and checked for dust build up?

Start> Run> type: mmsys.cpl then hit OK.
Click on Sounds tab.
Check under Programs events: then Windows and see if a sound is set for menu or opening program.

no sound set for either. although, i found that the sound that the desktop clicking is making is the default beep.

ok, here's something else to add to the symptom. If I click on the "show desktop" on the Start bar area, all the open windows minimize and the MS Office Shortcut Bar tucks itself in behind the Start bar. When this happens, I am able to use the dektop and the icons that are located there. When I click on the "show desktop" icon again and everything maximizes, then the beeping happens again when I click my mouse on anything on the desktop.

BTW, Windows defender found nothing and norton is still running.
