Exclamation My new pc
Hi everyone, I just got a new pc and it came with everything installed, and I did the registration, but now when I try to login to windows, it has the user id as Administrator and I cannot delete or remove it so I can login as myself and use my new computer. I have been working on this and asking everyone under the sun about this since last monday, I even had to pay one guy, and he didn't even help. I know it is probably something simple, I just can't figure it out. Please help

I tried putting myself as guest and that won't work, it will not let me delete nor remove the administrator, that admin will not move

The administrator password should either be blank (nothing in the password field, just click OK or hit Enter) or it could be "password" (without the quotes).

It is empty, and I will try password, but when I hit ok or enter, then it tries to connect with an 877 number that is not associated with my modem. My modem already says that I am connected to the internet. And, no I cannot get rid of the 877 number either. Like I said, I have tried everything.

What you should do is get a paper and ink pen and then go into safe mode by pressing the F8 key on boot up, when going into safe mode when the log in screen comes up write down all of the accounts you see. then exit back and into normal Windows. Please post all of the accounts you see.

About the 877 number you see go to control panel and then thru Modems and check all of the settings for an 877 number. If you are on dial-up write down your ISP access number so you do not delete it. but if you find the 877 number remove it from the dial-ip.

tried the password thing, no luck, tried the safe mode and that was just weird, no names of accounts, and cannot delete or remove those dang 877 numbers. When I boot up, a window opens that says hit ctrl, alt & delete for security to sign in, that's when my logon to windows opens and the admin is in there and will not go away

I see that your new computer is a refurbished PC running Windows 2000. It appears to be running a bootup script.

I would suggest that you let the machine play out what it is trying to do when you logon to the Administrator account. Let it attempt to connect to the 877 number, and see what happens next.

If you can logon successfully, you need to do the following:

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Administrator and create a password for the Administrator account--one that you can remember or write it down and keep it in a safe place.

Create a new account named Admin (or something similiar) and make that account part of the Administrators group. Set a password for that account--same advice as above.

Create a new account for yourself named whatever you like, and set a password for that account--same advice as above. Make this account part of the Power Users group.

W2K and XP require 2 Administrator accounts on the machine if there are more users than just the Administrator account. You cannot remove or delete the Administrator account. Once you have setup a second Administrator account, that account also cannot be removed without first creating another account in the Administrators group. There must always be at least two accounts in the Administrators group (Administrator and one more).

By setting up a Power User account for normal use, you are adding a layer of security to your machine by not running the Administrator account with full priviledges all the time. A worm or trojan can take over your machine quickly and tenaciously if it is given full Administrator priviledges. A power user account will allow you to install programs, etc. but not seriously alter the machine setup.
