I'm backed up to about three months ago...That doesn't mean wiping when I don't have to is the way to go.

If windows installed the safety to prevent clones and hijackings, and I'm neither...there has to be a way to show the machine it's ok to play.

Someone here said "only hardware is permanently damaged..." This is a software issue.

Up date on this problem:
I returned the HD to its original computer and, soon after, GOT THE WHOLE DRIVE CONTENTS BACK AGAIN!

Now, if I am real daring, I could just try again - AFTER backing everything up. But tell me, WHY didn't the drive in the newer computer detect the new hardware? I do want to up-grade from the present Pent 3 to the waiting Pent 4 machine, somehow.

Question: HOW does one safely delete all editions of Windows except the current one? [Remember, I have Windows98, WINDOWS and WINDOWS2 folders on file, and I only need the 'WINDOWS' folder.]

Hi ALL..
I'm a new member.I had joned prior, but forgot password, so had to rejoin! I hope I'm in the right catagory for this question. I recently acquired a new puter. A compaq presario. It didn't come with the reinstall backup CD as they used to. Instead one has to create their own. I didn't do this at the very start, but am ready to now! Where in the Start menu under programs I assume, do I access the Wizard, or whatever is needed to create these needed disks. A box has popped up prior stating to do this procedure, but I ignored it, but don't know where to find it now! I know that it requires 7 or 8 Cd's to create.

Any advice will be appreciated...

the coolest way to reinstall Windows XP these days is with the Setup Studio. You can check out this unattended installation software at www.setupstudio.net

nothing. its just that you lose so much time.
maybe if you reinstall once per year it doesnt matter, but if you need to reinstall more often you save hours and hours ...

You're probably right, but I read the blurb on Setup Studio and something told me to be cautious about this one. But if you've used it and it seems to be OK, then fine.

I have a question re intallations (you'll be happy to hear, this time!).
I installed WinXPHm on another computer which I was proposing buying a separate copy for later. I now have this brand new (legal) copy and want to Activate it in the new one's 'name'. What do I do? Call Microsoft and explain the situ? [The original copy I used is the one Activated and used on another computer.]

Would you happen to know what to do about this...
I'm trying to repair or reinstall XP, but while the setup is running it keeps stopping saying "Setup cannot copy the file: netbios.sys" (there are about 4 additional files that it also cant copy). It gives me the option to retry, which doesn't work. The other option is to skip the files. I've done this but when its finished Windows wont open. I'm assuming it's because of the missing files.
I tried to use Recovery Console but I It asks for my administrator password which I never used & dont remember. I really dont care which method I have to use to get my Windows back up as long as it doesn't delete the data on my hard drive. I have irreplacable & extremely valuable stuff in there. Got any ideals?
