Solved: Help Lost Documents!
A friend’s daughter was using his PC, on MSN messenger, and now two of the user profiles have been changed and documents have disappeared! There may well be no connection with what she was doing but it is her profile and one other which has changed and two others on the PC remain unchanged.

So there are 4 user profiles set up on the PC and for his daughter the whole look of XP changed and IE appeared to revert to IE5 even though IE6 is installed on the PC. The task bar changed from the usual blue XP style to a grey one as per the picture. She also lost her wall paper and all the programmes went missing from the start menu. I assume this affected the programmes which should have run on start up from working correctly and when we tried to launch Zonealarm we got an error message to do with VSINIT.dll. Also for some reason in the control panel I couldn’t switch to classic view in her profile.

I ran Adaware and Spybot and nothing untoward was found and then I ran HJT which is below. I have also enclosed, I hope, screen captures which show how the changes affected the UI. I have now restored the PC to a former restore point but whilst the look of the UI has gone back to what it should be she has still lost documents and things like IE favourites.

She only lost any documents which were not in a folder under my documents. What I mean by this is that my pictures, music etc appear to have survived untouched.

Also one other user who was not on the PC has not been as lucky; in this case the outlook .pst file has disappeared together with documents under ‘my documents’. The UI for this user did not at any point change as it did for his daughter. Finally two other user profiles and documents and files have remained complete and intact.

Could someone check the HJT and make sure there’s nothing untoward and also is this a result of something malicious or is it a sign of something more hardware / software related and that the fact she was on MSN is a complete red herring.

either something or someone deleted the user profiles or they corrupted

lets see what we can find

download filesearch.bat to your desktop from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/...pmod;dl=item11

double click it and it will make a list of ALL files and folders in both C:\windows & c:\windows\system32 and a list of all folders in C:\program files so we can plough through them and spot anything dodgy, hopefully

it will only pop up for a quick flash

a file search.txt should pop up, save it to desktop as it makes it easier to find
If it doesn't pop up then a copy will be in C:\filesearch.txt

It will be too big to upload here so go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0 and upload there
Just press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to your post here & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the file on your computer, when the file is listed in the windows press send to upload the files

repeat with appdata.bat from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/...pmod;dl=item12

and then repeat again with all user_appdata.bat http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/...pmod;dl=item13

so you will have 3 files to upload

filesearch.txt
appdata.txt
au_appdata.txt

We have also noticed that if a user logs out whilst another user is still logged on to a session then the PC is more prone to hanging and the only way to resolve the problem is to reboot the PC. I don't know if this is connected in any way or if the reports can help with this at all? Thanks in advance for your help

there is nothing obvious in the logs there but that doesn't rule out a virus or trojan

lets see if this will show anything

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

nothing showing at all

All I can see is that there appears to have been drive corruption & checkdisk ran

when it finds things it makes directories like C:\found.000\dir0000.chk

to put all it's found files

it's very possible all the lost files are soemwhere in there but it is a slow painstaking job to examine each .chk file to see what it contains & retrieve any part of them

In view of this I will move you to XP forum as it doesn't really sound like a security issue more a windows one

Derek I appreciate all your help and will plough through as suggested, even if it is possibly fruitless. Why this one intrigues me is that the PC isn't that old and Mesh have replaced the HDD in May time due to problems with the blue screen of death, even though they they say there was no problem and wonder if any of this is a throw back to past problems

looking at the .chk files the missing .pst file is there but the documents which were in my documents aren't, although sub folders like my picture etc appear to be untouched.

Anyone with XP experience able to help here to take this forward at all?

In particular any ideas on why the user profile got corrupted?

Change the file settings to show hidden files and show file extention names. Look for anything named ".old" without the quotes around that time frame. Have you tried a System Restore?
I'll bet you are a big believer in backups now, aren't you?? Not being mean, but you've heard it a hundred times.
