Chkdsk runs ... but can't see it
so right after normal windows screen shows up ... when chkdsk normally runs after an error, Chkdsk runs... but i just see a black screen.

i can hear hard drive going, light flashing... i even see the folders where it had repaired stuff Found.000 after.

i can even "push any button to halt chkdsk" to stop it.

i used to see it run repair with the % showing for each drive it checked.

what happened? Suggestions on fixing it?

If CHKDSK running every time he starts his computer

Click on the Start menu and open the run dialog.
2. Type "cmd" and return (without quotes)
3. Next type "fsutil dirty query <letter of drive that ckdsk keeps checking>" (for example, C
4. If the returned message indicates that the volume is dirty, go to step 5
5. Next type "chkdsk <drive letter> /f /x"
6. After that finishes, repeat step 3.
7. If the volume is no longer dirty, reboot and chkdsk should not reappear.

The "fsutil dirty query" reports the current state of the flag.
"Chkdsk /f" forces Chkdsk to run whether or not the flag is dirty--- it's a way to ensure that errors are fixed, regardless of what the flag says.
"Chkdsk /x" goes a little further and helps ensure that any files that were left open get closed; it actually implies "/f" so you don't need the /f if you're using /x .
With either /f or /x, at the end of the run, Chkdsk should set the flag to clean

thanks for the response...

but chkdsk isn't running every boot

the problem is that when it does run, i can't see it.

normally if everything is fine, not seeing it isn't a problem. But if it stops and ask a Y/N question or freaks out somehow then i'm stuck because i can't see what's going wrong.

How long ago did this problem with chkdsk start?

Could you try a system restore to a day or two before the problem started?

no, it's been a week or so

it started when i try to upgrade from a single to a dual processor

it freaked my system out ... so i had to go back to the single processor and restore with a Ghost image.

everything else seems fine ... i just don't understand why the video goes dark during Chkdsk.
