Evening all, i did a search and did not find any info on this problem on the site, so here goes...

Two computers, not on same network... both with same IP address.

What I was trying to do was access a relative's computer in another state using WINXP's remote assistance. The computer I am trying to access has same IP address as myself. Now I have worked on this computer at my house, and utilized it on the net for updates.. etc.

I have tried IPconfig /flushdns as well as IPconfig /release and renew

what am I doing wrong?

Is the address a private network address (etc 192.168.???.??? / 10.80.???.??? usually) or is it an address supplied by your ISP.

For example, on my home network my internal private address is 192.168.1.2 but my external one provided by my ISP is 82.37.173.95 (i made that up).

If both machines are based on networks then chances are the gateway\router will have some form of administration settings which would allow you to perform what is called "Network Address Translation or NAT"

This, in its simplest form tells the gateway\router that when it receives a packet (communication) from an external source, to look at which port it is heading to, in the NAT screen on the gateway\router you tell the software that if a packet comes through wanting to go to the specified port then to send it to the internal address specified.

E.g

You tell NAT to send all packets addressed to port 12345 to go to internal address 192.168.1.2

Any traffic from outside the network addressed to port 12345 will go to that address and no where else.

So basically you need to configure both networks to handle all data sent to the Remote Desktop port and route it through to the PC you are connecting to. Then you would tell Remote Desktop to connect to the EXTERNAL address (one from your ISP)

To find out the external address simply do a google search for "What is my IP address" and that will provide you with hundreds of links which will tell you.

My IP starts with the 192.168.0.... as well as the relative's computer in the other state

I am gonna look over your post and see what I can come up with.

Can you manually edit the IP address and just change the 192.168.0.x to a different number? it shouldn't matter as that address is private, but you will need to know the gateway and dns addresess
