connected to network but cannot browse
Alll of a sudden my Compaq presario C304NR notebook, running winxp w/norton security cannot browse the net using either IE7 or netscape, although the pc says I am connected to a wifi signal with good strength. I even tried plugging into a highspeed jack at my local library (which I had done w/o problems in the past) but the browser won't display any web pages. Perhaps a bug reset some basic setting somewhere but I can't find it. I Run adaware and do a norton virus scan regularly and had nothing come up. Here is a Hjackthis scan. I don't see any obvious issues in the Scanlog.

The problem you describe is often caused by a corrupt winsock key in the registry.

The fix for it in XP SP2 is the following.

Start > Run > cmd

At the command prompt type and enter:

netsh winsock reset catalog

reboot afterwards.

It is better to use the built-in sp2 command. I do not believe the patches available on the net fully restore the SP2 winsock.

The line command didn't work in my case but the patch did. Thank you for the help. Now I just wonder what caused the problem in the first case to avoid this in the future.

The line command should have worked, I can't tell you why it didn't.

Many of these patches were drawn from pre SP2 winsocks which were exported. While they will "work" they may not provide support for the IPv6 protocol in SP2.
