how to remove an ad on my desktop
When I went to screensavers and got a new wallpaper, a new ad appeared on my desktop and I cannot get rid of it.
It is not an icon where I can right click and delete. It says EZ Win g o to www.ezwin.ca
I used my search tool entering all of these words and cannot find it. It is not in Add or Delete programs.
How do I get rid of it?
I used my browser and entered www.ezwin.ca and got an ad for many different sites.
Please help.
Thank you,
Gloria:

Hi Gloria
please post a hijackthis log so a member can identify the problem.

Hi, Please use this link to download an easier type of Hijackthis, it automatically will put the file in the proper location for you, and here is some help with getting your log posted, too:

  • Save Hijackthis.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit EDIT then SELECT ALL then click EDIT and then click COPY, doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
  • Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
  • At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit EDIT then PASTE
  • You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi, I had posted for you to get AVG Antispyware, then of course noticed you are using One Care, which should include Windows Defender and it is not a good idea to try to install other antispyware programs while One Care/ Defender is installed.

Let's remove things with Hijackthis instead>

MyWebSearch and toolbar is minor adware....if you LIKE and USE it optional to remove....leave it's entries alone in Hijackthis if you are keeping MyWebSearch. It's also advisable to try and uninstall it first from Add/Remove Programs....

One Carel Live or Defender should have prompted you about it also about Starware....?????

Run HJT and if you see the below items in your scan, put checks next to each of my list you see in your HJT scan and when you have them checked, with all other windows CLOSED including any IE browser ones, this one included....click "Fix Checked"

In Safe Mode, use Windows Explorer, at the top of Explorer window:

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search>Files and Folders>> and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Next: find and delete the files at the end of lines from your folders shown, not the folders, just the files....

If you get error messages about files in use, we will have to use Safe Mode to delete them.
(Make a list of them with a Notepad, save as list.txt to your dekstop, and include the folders to delete)

How to get to Safe Mode in XP:

Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\4.bin\mwsoemon.exe <<these files at the end

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\4.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\4.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL
C:\Program Files\Starware316\bin\Starware316.dll

Next., delete the folders:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\4.bin <<this one

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt <this one next

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <<then this one.

C:\Program Files\Starware316\bin <<this folder

C:\Program Files\Starware316 <<then this one

Boot up normally to regular mode Windows, run Hijackthis and post a new log please.

When I went to Screensavers.com and downloaded the wallpaper (before I wrote to you), that is when I got that ad on my desktop.
Do you think that this "ad" was generated by Scrrensavers?

Just a note to tell you that I did a System Restore (to the 19th) and the "ad" went away on the desktop.
This is so much easier than going through the HJT which did not work.
I never could find the My Web or Starware files in those 91,000 files.
But the Smiley Central (which is a part of the My Web Search) is not there any more

Please consider this System Restore as an option to others.
Please consider my case closed.
Thank you for you response to my problem.

Hi, The files may not have been found if you fixed them using Hijackthis....

Yes, screensavers are noted for bundling crap.

screensavers.com especially.

Fine that System Restore worked for you-

it sometimes does not. Reason: Your earlier Restore Points may also be infected, and using one would simply put back any malware that was backed up by Restore- it's not particular what it restores.

What I posted for you to do, was either use Search to find those few files I listed and delete them manually, it's just easier than in Windows Explorer, but either will work and both have to be set to unhide files.

The changes in settings was made so you could "see" the hidden and system files.

Search may have LOOKED through 91,000 files but should have only found a few locations for each....so I am not sure what you are saying.
