Firstly, thanks for solving this mystery that has bugged me for ages, both at work and home.

Have tried the above suggestion, but have noticed you don't get short cuts that are in the allusers\desktop folder. You must move them from this folder to the (profile name)\desktop.

Also to get round the missing IE, my docs, my computer and network places, simply create a short cut to each of these on your desktop then goto display properties\desktop\customise desktop and uncheck them all so you don't get duplicates. This gives you a link that only opens a windows and not the pop up contents.
