Dawn -- you didn't follow my directions. I specifically said to check the box to HIDE all Microsoft services and disable ONLY the NON Microsoft ones. You disabled the System Restore service and that wiped out all your restore points.

I'm not sure what problem you are having now -- what services will not turn back on?

Also make sure the system.ini and win.ini groups are also enabled in msconfig.

I would also advise you at this point to go to the Control Panel and create a new User Account for youself with Administrative rights -- log into that when rebooting and work from that for now.

What can I say?
I messed up. I could use my profound ADHD and the fact that I'm in the middle of changing meds as an excuse, but - well, I guess I just did. I was reading your directions and the pages I printed from Microsoft at the same time, but they both say the same thing. So no lame excuses to be found there. I have sys.ini and win.ini and everything that could be checked in the system configuration enabled. AOL is the only problem that I have run into so far that seems a complete loss. However, I haven't checked a lot of things only because what I have tried has had some problem or another. Some times Mozilla opens and sometimes it doesn't. I'm on my mother's computer right now. I opened Word Perfect and wrote a letter, but I can't save it or print it. It says I have no printer. I assume the more I try to do the more big problems that I'll find and , honestly, it's depressing me today that I can try a month long death penalty case and get my woman life, but I can't do the simplest stuff on my computer. I ran my AVG anti-virus, just on a lark, and one thing came up. It said that ntoskrnl.exe needed to "Change". It's now in C:\WINDOWS\system32. I showed no viruses, but I didn't expect to. I will create the new user account right away. You were trying your best to help and I screwed up. Sorry. If you were my client I'd tell you to jump ship now. I'm due for another full crash, judging by my priors.

Hang in there

What model of printer is this? USB? are you sure all the cables are connected, the lights are on, etc? Does it do a self test?

Can you remove and reinstall the printer drivers?

How about reinstalling Firefox -- or heck give Opera a shot (my favorite):

Hmmmm
I'm just kind of putzing around, not touching anything important, absorbing the fact that I am in a situation where I guess I basically have to start all over again. I won't lose anything, I still save it all to floppy disk (shows my age). Except I guess I lose all of my customizations to my programs. I spent a lot of time looking at all of Mozilla's add-ons one day, etc. I just recently heard about Opera. What is it about it that you like? By the way, I'm back on AOL. How that happened I have no clue. Is there any worthwhile reason to try and do anything by running services.msc, or by dealing with Microsoft (not something I look forward to but if it reversed most of what I did it would be worth it.) I guess I haven't accepted the true nature of my plight. There are very few programs that came along with me to the new user account that work correctly. Not too many appear there at all.
My printer is new and on a USB hub. It's all hooked up with nothing loose. I guess that 5 years ago Sony didn't predict that every device coming out in the future would have a USB connector. My mouse and scanner are also on there. My floppy drive, also new, is on my other USB port. I can certainly uninstall and reinstall my printer drivers. Looks like I'll have to do something similar to that with all my programs, really. You know, I have all my Office suite programs on the other partition of my hard drive. I didn't even think to check if that's all screwed up too. You would know that. Also, isn't system config still screwed up? Even with a new user? I just don't know enough. It seems that Bono's lyrics are correct, "the more I learn, the less I know."
I truly appreciate all of your help and encouragement. If you ever come to Chicago and kill someone e-mail me and I'll represent you. Juries like me. I'm down to earth, or so they tell me. I think I'll step away from this computer tonight and see how much I want to tackle tomorrow. Maybe there is a good old 40's movie on TV tonight. Watch the TV break.
Thanks so much,
Dawn

Well I'm glad to hear AOL is back for you.

But tell me why you think you need to reinstall ALL your programs. My understanding is that just the printer isn't working.

If you are doing this from a new account -- log back into the old one and test there. Somethings DO need to be reinstalled when new accounts are used.

But my idea is just to test both the old and new accounts and see what issues may only happen in the old account (like the original "weird page" one).

I would certainly reinstall the printer drivers and see if you get any errors during the reinstall.

About Opera: well it has a lot of convenient features that are built in -- and do not have to be added as pluggins. It takes a lot of time to get familiar with them all -- but when you do you don't know how you did without them.

One of the first things to do after installing it is highlight some browser text, right click on it and see the choices in your right click context menu.

It's very easy to enable/disable cookies, plugins, javascript, java etc; Also you can load or not load images for particular pages -- a very convenient feature at times. You can auto refresh specific pages after specified time intervals.

And after a quick download, you can have any text read as speech output, just by selecting the text -- right click and select speech. It works better than the text to speech program I paid for.

OK got a new idea
Hi -

To answer your question: sometimes AOL opens and sometimes it won't; the same is true of Mozilla, Word Perfect found the printer, but it still refuses to save documents, there is a lot of the bad kind of beeping when I click on things that won't open, i-Tunes can't decide whether to give me an error message about an audio problem or to just open up without the message and let me take my chances (I recently reloaded over 900+ songs on to the library as I couldn't bring myself to do it for months after a big crash and all the songs are on the i-Pod. Hopefully they are still on the disks I had saved them to.), AVG shows this new thing about ntoskrnl.exe needing to "Change"; and the computer crawls. So it seems to keep changing it's own mind on me about what will open and when it will show errors. I haven't even tried to use all 22 programs. There are 10 programs on the new user account, so I'd have to load 12 anyway. I titled this post about having a new idea, but I'd have to check whether it is feasible with my i-Tunes library. I was going to ask if I could just wipe this partition of the hard drive clean and start over. The problem is that I don't know whether I can save my tunes, again. Also, does it resolve the Sys Config problem? I keep thinking of crazy stuff, like downloading all the Microsoft updates again, getting what I screwed up, and then deleting the old services that I screwed up. This is why I no longer do stuff without asking. Of course, when you ask and don't follow directions that works about as well as just amateur guessing.
I just see so many things under services that I can't turn on I believe that more problems are bound to come up. They all turned on under services.msc and I was thrilled to reboot. Of course you know the result. I suppose it caused some of these things to work intermittently, but the sys config still has numerous programs stopped. At this point I can't afford it but I'd pay some money if I could just fix the freaking sys config.
How many times can I say Thank You?

OOPS forgot
Just so that I'll tear all of my hair out, the two weird pages that pop up in the beginning do that with the new user also.

I can't answer the question about Itunes.

But you say you are hearing "beeping". This is almost always a hardware issue and with the beeps being generated by the motherboard.

It could mean you are overheating or the power supply is bad.

First, if you run eventvwr.msc and look at the system and applications log -- what errors are repeating regularly? You can double click them to read their descriptions and there is a double-paper copy icon that can be used to copy the description to the clipboard for pasting.

also, install Speedfan and see if you are getting any red flames for temperatures:

Info you need
OK I'll try this again. I posted most of the following info and then I turned to see a Cub home run and hit something and I lost my response. It might help to clean the desk. I was unable to download your speedfan. It said that the Php file may be corrupted. I do have PC Wizard, which is simplier for those of us who need things spelled out with computers, and it may have what you need. Here's what it says:
chassis fan 1350 rpm
processor fan 1577 rpm
processor temp 47C
mainboard temp 33C
Power/Aux temp 33C
Hard Disk temp 26C
If you need anything else I can try and get the speedfan from another site. I should explain about the beeping. It isn't happening a lot. As an auto mechanic in my former life, I think that it is just a feeling I have that the sounds coming from the machine are symptoms that it is sick. It's like car. You just know from the sound and feel that there is a real problem. I used TweakUI to turn the beeping off, since I'm not learning anything from it. Now, the other stuff you want to know. Prior to my messing up I just had an occasional Yield sign next to userenv. As of yesterday I have long lists of errors. How can 48 EventSystem errors all occur at the same second? The same is true, dated yesterday, for a bit less long lists of DCOM errors, MsiInstaller errors, and COM+ errors.
I did check my iTunes and I can reload my songs from the backup disks that I have.
Also, I don't know what this means, but all of my icons now have little white curved arrows on the bottoms of them. Isn't that a symbol for a shortcut? I'm sure that in the scheme of things it's no big deal.
I guess that right now I don't know what my options are. I'd really appreciate it if you could spell them out for me. I don't know how having the problematic sys config affects the second user account, etc. Can I totally wipe this larger part of my hard drive partition and reload everything, including everything that I lost from Microsoft? Maybe it's time for me to just make an informed decision and stop imposing on your kind hospitality.

Well the temps are normal, the beeping is not. How did you turn that off in TweakUI, and can you describe the beeps in more detail? Are they of a particular pattern? If Tweak turned it off, it's not a motherboard beep but a program error.

The arrows are shortcut indicators. There is also a TweakUI option which sets or disables this as I recall.

The Userenv errors can usually be resolved by installing this:

>> Have you tried running chkdsk on the drive?

http://www.housing.hawaii.edu/resour...ort/chkdsk.htm

>> post another Hijackthis Scanlog while you're at it.

>> Finally can you tell me what the services are in msconfig > services that you cannot get turned on?

The latest
Sorry. Once again I didn't read completely enough and I didn't see your request to post another Hijack This log. I'll get that done. I still don't understand why my first log was missing so many things.
I'm not worried about the beeping. I turned it back on, and really part of what I was thinking in the beginning was that I was annoyed by the unhealthy sounds that the computer was making when I rebooted. You don't need to read anything into that, maybe it's just me but I can hear when something's wrong. It has never been a hardware problem when I've felt that way before. In the beginning of this mess there were many things that I clicked on that beeped back at me. They are now working and don't beep any more. So the computer perceived errors where there were none, and thankfully they are becoming fewer and fewer. The services were a mess, so it makes sense to me. I still checked the hardware with my Belarc program and the PC Wizard. I also ran the tests in the link that you sent me and no hardware problems showed up.
I've been putzing around a lot and if you go into services.msc everything is up and running automatically. If you go into msconfig everything is on except for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Now, when I say on, some things that should be set to automatic are set to manual. I haven't had luck changing that with some essential services. I have learned there is an extremely wide variance on the web in what people thing are essential and what they don't. So, I'd say that after all I've read maybe five manual things need to get to automatic - plus I need BITS. Don't even ask me how some of these things went from stopped to manual. It really doesn't seem like going into services.msc makes the changes that I want, but maybe it had some effect. Also, I've installed programs during this time, and under msconfig my Windows Installer was supposedly stopped. Maybe I'm trying to make a logical connection there that isn't right.
I'll post the Hijack This log.

Ok, well I don't see anything "wrong" with the log except that in your journey to services.msc you seem to have enabled a lot of services that you don't need running.

What I suggest you do is to read this page and set the services according to the RECOMMENDED settings:

Good morning
Hello -

I had the same idea this morning as you did and I was going to ask you what list you would use to determine which services should be running or not. Before I checked in though I checked msconfig once again and found that BITS is now running on automatic. Thank you for the link. I will go turn off everything which is unnecessary. If you have a similar one for the processes running in my task manager I would be grateful. I had that and my start up all worked out, but through all this I have seemed to have gathered some new processes, and perhaps turned others back on without realizing it. Otherwise I'm sure that I can find a list from a reputable site - no big deal. Maybe it will be my lucky day and the things that turned up running as manual this morning will be non-essential.
Have a good day. I'm not going to bother you again today. Oh, one more thing, my TV did break. The sound is cutting in and out. I'm on the same DirecTv system as my sister, who's room is right above mine, and she is having no sound trouble so that would seem to narrow it to the TV. I can either go stick my head under my pillow or smile. I can smile since it's still under warranty.

Thanks so very much and have yourself a great day.
