You could try reilnstalling the Installer. See this page, it may be your problem.

OK, try a "sfc /scannow' (You type that in at the "run" command on the Start menu. Don't forget the gap between the sfc and the /, and don't include the " marks. Have your XP disc handy, it may be asked for.)
See if that helps. If not, we'll try something else.
also, see below...

And if it does not help, try stopping and starting the service, see this:

Hi, Steroids.

Welcome to TSG.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If the above link is broken, try this link. Make sure you extract and save the Hijackthis.exe file in a Permanent folder, rather than a Temp folder.

Hi, Steroids

First use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. It is a free download from the Microsoft support web site.

When you run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, it presents a list - typically a long list - of items known to the Microsoft Installer:

Scan the list looking for something that appears to be Dragon Naturally Speaking related, and something that matches any additional clues you might be seeing from the Microsoft Installer messages on your reboot, and remove. Restart the computer and test.

Keep me posted.

Hi, Steroids

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Batch file, RemInstaller.bat . Once extracted, double click on the RemInstaller.bat file. The MSDOS window will flask for a second. That is normal. This file will rename key files pertaining Windows Installer. Once done, please restart the computer.

After the restart, click here to download Windows Installer 3.0 and install the application.

Let me know how is the computer doing afterward?
