Solved: Hard drive almost full. Can't find out why.
My wife's laptop has started to take up almost all of it's disk space.
It is an 80 gb drive and there is only about 9.5 GB of free space.

I have tried running windirstat.exe but I'm not able to dertemine which
files are eating up all the space. There is nothing unusual on the disk.
We have Outlook 2003 running, IPOD software, Word and Excel, Google toolbar, Mozilla Firefox and all the usual "stuff", but none of them seem to add up to 68 Gb of data.
I have removed all the .jpg files, which only resulted in about a 1.5 GB
becoming free.
I'm at a loss. I ran Scandisk (no errors), & can't do a defrag since the system needs 15GB free space to execute.

I have an external hard drive (250mb) that I have been "off loading" some files to and have managed to gain about 3 gb of space, which has the system sitting with the 9.5 gb I mentioned.
I am including a HJT report. Perhaps you might see something that's causing the problem.
The five largest files I could find are the Windows driver.cab 74,903kb,
Registry Backup.reg 66,571 kb,
IPOD Updater 2006-01-10.exe,
another Windows driver.cab (in a diff directory) 74,902 kb (same as the first one,
and lastly the outlook.pst file which I know is large, but we have a lot of emails and contacts in it (184,529 KB).
Here's hoping you can supply some help.

MY Wife's computer: (Ignore computer specs in my signature, that's for my laptop)

Lotta junk....Start in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove everything you don't use in there.

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types", close it out.

Go to START > Search, then select "All Files and Folders", then select the C: drive (if that is your root directory) and click search......now rearrange the files by size (biggest to smallest) and see what files may be taking up a lot of space.

Howdy,

Have a look in Disk Management and see how the Hard drive is partitioned as it may have a Recovery or backup that is taking up space.

Click Start>>right click My Computer>>Manage and then on the left-hand side click on Disk management.

Look at image below

Also did you use to have Norton on that PC?

Make sure your system is showing all files and folders, and showing hidden and operating system files.

Click Start > Search select All files and folders and type *.log in the name box, then click the Search button.

If you're formatted in NTFS, every 1KB log file is taking up 4KB of space. And you may find some large log files, as well.

Disk management indicates "healthy" system. My search is set for showing hidden files.
I have run searches of file sizes and nothing very huge shows up, except for my Outlook.pst file which is 97,000 kb. Even if I delete it, it would not free up a significant amount of space.
I ran WINDIRSTAT and one of the options is to show "unknown" files. When I turned that option on, I see that there is 53.2 GB that is "unknown". I have not found a way to view what this is. Could it be a worm/virus/trojan etc?
We once had NAV but for the past 4 years have been using AVG.
As for the .log files, there are 453 of them in various directories.
The .tmp files are a lot too, 3,727.

It seems that there are a lot of .dll files (8,245). I can't believe that there are so many.

Something is weird. I'm tempted to re-install XP, but that can be a real pain especially when you're not sure where all the install disks are.
Can I safely delete All the .tmp files, regardless of where they are sitting?
Same for the .log files?
Naturally, I will not touch the .dll's.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Also it may help if you post your Uninstall list.
  • Open and Run HijackThis
  • Click on Open Misc Tools Section button
  • Then Click on Open Uninstall Manager
  • On the right hand choose Save List
  • Copy & Paste it in your next reply.

Bonk, I did as you advised even though I had emptied some of those. I like the ATF cleaner, very nice. Our disk space is still only at 11.3 GB.
Do you have any idea what "unknows" are? On MY laptop I have about 7gb assigned to "unknowns", while on my wifes laptop over 53 gb are taken up by these "unknowns" as indicated by the "WINDIRSTAT" program.

PROBLEM SOLVED....I did some Google searches on "unknown" file as the "WINDIRSTAT.exe" indicated, that was taking up about 53 gb of space on my wife's laptop. It seems that MS "restore points" can eat up space, so I tested out my laptop
which had 7gb taken up by "unknown" file and I then turned off MS's restore points, which in effect deletes ALL restore points. My system gained about 6+ gb of space.
At this point, I then did the same on my wifes laptop and lo and behold!...it freed up
the 53gb and I'm a hero. Just make sure when doing this, to go back into system restore
and turn it back on, and then create a current restore point. I would suggest to anyone who has space problems t look into this.
I appreciate all the advice received and now can finally post something helpful to others.

If you go to Control Panel (classic view) System icon - click System Restore tab - Settings button - there is a slider which allows you to choose how much space System Restore can use for restore points.

PePeLePuu, I will check out the site you sent, you might want to take a look at
the WINDIRSTAT freeware too. It can be d/l'd from
http://www.snapfiles.com/opinions/Wi...inDirStat.html

Unbidden, I had checked out the space allocation which was set at the highest allowable
space (9761mb.). I will set it to a smaller allowance, but I can't see how that allowed my wifes computer to eat up 53 + gb of space. I have my computer set the same way and it only took up 7gig.
Thanks again for all the advice.

Hi,

I seem to have the same issues. I have windows 2000 and unable to find the system restore option. On MY PC, I have about 20 gb assigned to "unknowns", as indicated by the "WINDIRSTAT" program. Not sure how to proceed??

Thanks in advance!

There is no System Restore in Windows 2000.
