Tray App Problem
I did something that resulted in Error 1708 popping up every time I log on and it will not go away. It says,"There's is no valid source for the product Tray App. Windows Installer cannot continue."

I do recall downloading a free trial of RegCure (to clean registries) but then declining to proceed to buy the product. I think the problem stems from that.

Can you tell me how to get rid of the annoying message? And how to avoid having it recur?

Thank you.

How did you uninstall the program? Might have to reinstall it and then remove it from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. If you tried to remove entries with that program you might have to replace them by using the programs restore feature if it has one.

->First try booting the computer in safe mode.
(As soon as you start your computer keep tapping F8. In windows advanced startup options select safe mode)
->If you are NOT getting the error in safe mode than :
Start-run-msconfig
In the system config utility - click on the startup tab-click on disable all
-click on services tab-put a check on hide all microsoft services and than clck on
disable all.
-Than click on apply-click on close and restart the computer

Hello, Lefty!

I didn't uninstall RegCure. It shows up on Add/Remove Programs. I ran a scan but didn't purchase the program to eliminate the problems.

I'm not sure if it was the free download -- without the purchase -- that caused the problem. It just appeared around the same time I tried the freebie. I don't think I'll see a replacement option unless I purchase the program, which may be a good one. It says I have something like 1300+ registry problems. And this is a new computer.

Being technically challenged, I have trouble understanding what is wanted or needed.

I appreciate your responding.

Does Windows load after the message or does it just stick there? Might try going into Safe Mode and see if the problem shows up there. As stated by ihelp, you can disable some start up programs by going into msconfig in Safe Mode. look for any program listed in msconfig that might be new to you in the last week or so and disable that. Then reboot and see what happens. if it still does that look again and disable another program that may be new. This will be a trail and error until you find the one that is causing the problem. Once you disable the correct one, go back in and enable the others.

My apologies, Lefty and I Help. I haven't been ignoring your suggestions, just have had problems implementing them. For example, when I try to go into Safe Mode, although various options are listed, the U & D keys do nothing. The computer insists on starting Windows normally. So I don't have an opportunity to remove programs in Safe Mode.

I went to Start/Add/Remove and found that the same icon that's next to Tray App on the task bar is attached to a eught or 10 other programs. Some I recognize, some I don't. When I try to DELETE them, I get the message that another program installation must be completed before THIS INSTALLATION can continue. I don[t want to install . . . I want to delete.

As I've said, the Tray App box appears on start up and will not go away. It's looking for a CD-Rom, but I don't know for what.

Also, I cannot shut down from the Start menu. Nothing happens. I have to just turn it off.

One HP tech concluded that maybe I have to perform a Non-Destructive recovery -- after backing up everything. I don't feel competent doing that -- on this 3-month old computer. There are to be an easier way to get rid of this pest. I don't even know what it is!!!

Tray App Problem
In desperation, I deleted the software for my HP printer, which was acting strangely. Then I re-installed it. Tray App has disappeared, but the software is still wacky. It tells me to plug in the printer, even while it's printing, copying, faxing and scanning.

I'm going to contact HP Live Chat, although previous Chats were not successful in solving my problem.

Thanks for your input. Maybe my experience with Tray App (I was repeatedly asked to insert the Tray App CD-rom, whatever that is) will help someone else.
