Then I realized I am not hearing that annoying windows startup/shutdown music, either.
I have a freshly installed, fully updated version of XP Pro running Media Player 11 and the latest Flash player (Youtube suggested making sure of this).
It is probably not relevent, but I also have Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced installed.
I have no problem with CDs, DVDs, or even the music sample player at Amazon.com.
One more note, I have the AC97 Audio drivers (provided with the Motherboard) installed.
The speaker symbol that usually resides on the lower right of my screen is not there, and when I go into Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Volume tab, it says "no audio device" and the "device volume" section is grayed out/inactive. I assumed this was because the chores were handle by the MB dirvers, but I don't know.
Thanks, in advance, for the help. I have no more hair to pull out... | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Update Probably no surprise, but I found I get no sound from myspace.com, either. In fact, the Internet explorer 7 hung up and stopped responding a time or two.
I have also checked my sounds settings and it is set to play Windows default music, but it doesn't.
Sure hope someone can help.

What new hardware was installed or upgraded on your computer? | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Hardware upgraded Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the reply.
New Hardware consist of Mach Speed P4M800P-8237 motherboard with a Pentium D 2.8 gig CPU and 2 gig of PC4200/5300mhz DDR RAM .
Probably doesn't matter, but I also installed a 300 gig Maxtor SATA hard drive which is 300 capable, but I am running at a "force 150" setting, because that is all the MB is can handle.
That is what's new...pretty much all but the OS, power supply and case is different.
I am totally up to date with WinXP, including NET framework. | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Forgot this... Forget this...
Again, probably doesn't matter, but I also added 2 DVD play/record drives which play fine. I have ripped from them, but have not burned any discs yet.
Thanks again. | | Distinguished Member with 11,853 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Experience: Advanced | | I notice you installed the audio drivers for the sound card but there are other drivers that have to be installed and they come on a special driver disk that is included with the motherboard and everything on the disk should be installed. These drivers include not only audio but video, chipset (installed first), network card, and an assortment of others.
Get these installed and it probably will solve your problem.

The only drivers I had not installed were 2 LAN drivers, but I re-installed all drivers - except one called "FamilyLan", because XP protested with 2 dire consequences warnings.
Unfortunately, same results - nothing from youtube or myspace, but I can get sound from a site called freetube.us.tc (Freetube also worked before I re-installed the drivers.)
This one is a headscratcher for me. | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | PS - Audio is the problem, video has always worked fine. | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | PROBLEM SOLVED - found the answer Alright, folks. I found the problem...on my own.
The answer is so simple it is scary, and I would be ashamed to say what it is, except no one else had the answer.
Recall that in CONTROL PANEL under SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES and the VOLUME tab, I said it was greyed out. Even though I had all drivers installed, it said "NO AUDIO DEVICE" and the DEVICE VOLUME could not be accessed.
Well, the problem was under the AUDIO tab and the SOUND PLAYBACK section. DEFAULT DEVICE was set to "Modem #0 Line Playback".
I clicked on the arrow on the right - for the drop down menu - and saw a second choice..."Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)".
I chose it, clicked on "APPLY", went back to the VOLUME tab, where it now read "Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)" and the volume was accessible.
clicked on "OK" - went to youtube.com and it played perfectly.
Problem solved.
If this helps just one person someday, it was worth the hassle.

#14 | No Sound in Windows. Problem Solved! I lost Windows sounds after I upgraded from Windows XP Home
to Windows XP Pro on my HP ZE4145 notebook.
I had sound for everything else, just no Windows sounds.
In Sounds and Audio Device Properties it said
"No Audio Device" and the
Device volume and Speaker settings were greyed out.
When I clicked on the Audio tab the following was indicated:
Sound Playback device UniModem #1 Line Playback.
Sound Recording device Unimodem #1 Line Record.
MIDI music playback was greyed out.
To solve the problem I did the following:
Opened Administrative Tools/Services
Clicked on the "Standard" Tab
Scrolled down to the "Windows Audio" service.
Guess what, The Windows Audio service was Disabled!!!
I double clicked on the Windows Audio service.
I changed the "Startup type" from "Disabled" to "Automatic"
In the Service status section I clicked "Start"
The Windows Audio service started.
I opened Control Panel and dbl clicked on Sound and Audio Devices.
Device volume and Speaker settings were no longer greyed out.
All windows sounds were restored.
My volume controls were restored, and I now had SoundMAX Digital Audio where it used to say "No Audio Device" I clicked on the audio tab and instead of the Unimodem devices that were there, now the default playback and recording device was set to SoundMAX Digital Audio and my MIDI music playback was now set to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth
You don't need to restart your computer after you activate the Windows Audio service.
The sound is restored as soon as you activate the service.
I restarted Windows because I wanted to hear that annoying Windows logon tune.
