Start Menu items gone!
For some strange reason my Start Menu items/shortcuts have been deleted (in both my Documents & Settings folder and 'All Users'), except for a blank shortcut (no name, no link) with the 'My Computer' icon. The weird thing is the Start Menu folders and their contents are in tact.

Initially I thought I accidentally deleted them so I manually created a few shortcuts back to some of programs, but after restarting Windows, they were gone again and only that mysterious blank shortcut appeared again!

I did a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus 2007 and AVG Anti-Spyware and they didn't find anything.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

TIA

Hum with the changes made and then disappearing on reboot are you getting any error message like a profile not being able to load.

no i'm not getting a error message about loading the profile. but i do remember windows freezing during a recent shutdown (at the "Windows is shutting down now..." screen) and I just powered off the computer manually (holding power button for 5 seconds)

could that have been the culprit? if so how do I fix this? if not, what else could it be?

are you getting any other errors or weird things happening with your system?

What were you doing before the problem accrued?
Installed any new Hardware or software Recently?
Removed any hardware or software Recently?

I would start by checking in right click on taskbar and choose properties
choose start menu tab and click on customize
Cliick on the advanced button
See if it lists the correct path
C:\Documents and Settings\DiGiTY\Start Menu
Or if it has a "default user" instead of your normal account.

I am having the same problem. Not sure what path oshwyn is talking about in his post. Mine doesn't how a path anywhere in the advanced tab of the STart menu properties. This is the second time that I have done a reformat on XP and restored files using the backup wizard. Didn't have this problem the first time.

Anyone come up with a fix for this yet.

i'm still having this problem, never found a solution.

anything installed during installation in the start menu as just a shortcut disappears from the start menu upon restart. anything installed during installation in the start menu as a folder (a.k.a. program group) sticks upon restart

frakking weird

I'm not completely clear on this.

When you click the Start Button, there are no items displayed, but when you click All Programs, the folders and Shortcuts are there?
Or When you click Start, everything is there, but on All programs there are no shortcuts, but the folders and there shortcuts are there?
Or when you click Start, pinned items are missing as well as Recently Used programs?

A screen shot would probably help me visualize this.

Anyways, perhaps this may help:

When you click on the start button, everything looks normal. When you click on all programs, there is a list of all of the folders. The shortcuts in the folders are maintained. It's the shortcuts that show directly under all programs that are missing. They are not in a folder. Adobe Photoshop installs their shortcuts like this. I am going to attach a copy of the screenshot that shows what we are seeing.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be great.

Copy and paste the following into Start | Run then press enter.
A Notepad window will open. Copy and paste the contents back here.
Note - Your username will be displayed - edit it out or change it to username if you don't want it posted on the internet

cmd /c attrib "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\*.*" >c:\atr.txt & Notepad c:\atr.txt

Once done, you can enter cmd /c del c:\atr.txt into Start | Run to delete the file.

Did you follow the steps in the link I posted? I don't think it addresses this issue, but can't hurt to check.
I'm assuming you ran the regsvr32 /i shell32.dll command and got a success message?
Also, did you check the UserShellFolders to make sure they were correct?

Also, if you switch to the Classic Start Menu can you see the shortcuts?
right click Start click Properties, Start Menu Tab, tick the Classic radio button

Checked all of the registry values, and that is not the problem. I manually browsed to the folders as well. In the *anyuseronthecomputer*/start menu/programs folder, there is the same blank My computer link that is showing up on the start menu. Shortcuts for Adobe installed programs are missing. The links do not exist.

Running the command in one post produces the following. The text file is also attached.

A C:\Documents and Settings\Shane\Start Menu\Programs\.lnk
Attached Files
File Type: txt atr.txt (69 Bytes, 212 views)

I finally figured out what the heck is going on. I had purchased a copy of PowerDVD quite some time ago. version 7.3. For some reason the installer killed all fo the icons on my start menu. I uninstalled and everything is working. It must have been a registry entry messed up.

If you are the same problem, try uninstalling PowerDVD (if you have it) and see what happens. I have sent this problem to Cyberlink, and hopefully they have the issue rectified for future versions.
