Cool check shimgvw.dll and shmedia.dll
I stoped shimgvw.dll to stop the wmf(windows metafile) problem windows had a while back.
If you want to check if your machine can stops the wmf problem look for mouse trap on grc.com in the downloads section (download and run after starting shimgvw.dll)

To add image preview
start>run>cmd (this will open a dos window then type)
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

to shutoff (to test this will prevent the thumbnails from displaying)
start>run>cmd (this will open a dos window then type)
regsvr32 -u shimgvw.dll

if this does not work try starting shmedia.dll
start>run>cmd (this will open a dos window then type)
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Good Luck
