C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.EXE
Hello all i am new to the site and i dont know very much about computers. Anyway i hope you can help???

When i start up my computer and all the programs are starting up a DOS?? window opens up on my desk top with the heading "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.EXE" and "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" written twice in the black area, then a third line of "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" comes up then a few seconds after it just disapears.

I have tried to search for an answer but to no avail. I have run ad-aware, reistry mechanic and mcafee but the screen still pops up.

I dont know if it is a problem but i have seen a few posts talking about hijacks when talking about C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.EXE, so i just wanted to make sure that someone hasnt hacked into my computer.

Thanks

cmd.exe is normally all lower case letters, so I suspect the file may be modified. To see what is causing the command interpreter window to run, we need for you to post a HijackThis log.

Go here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required

You have a program named Clear All History that runs a batch file "index.bat" at startup. That would account for the command window your are seeing pop up. We aren't able to answer your question about "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process", because we don't know what is in the batch file.

If you go to C:\Program Files\ClearAllHistory\index.bat and right click the file, then click "edit" the file will open in Notepad. Copy and paste the contents here (unless it is too big). We can then see what the batch file is trying to do.

He has Clear All History installed and I would bet that the Index.bat file is clearing out all the Index.dat files.

The "index.bat" file is trying to delete your "index.dat" history files. Trouble is they cannot be deleted while Windows is running; that is why you see the three errors.

According to the Clear All History website, there are checkboxes for deleting index.dat files at startup. If done early enough in the startup, they can be deleted (too late and they won't). Here's the website instructions:

Double-click the ClearAllHistory tray icon or right-click the ClearAllHistory tray icon and select the Open Main Window item.
Click the Tools button in the toolbar.
Select What to Clear -> Browser History item.
Check the Clear Browser History option.
In "Delete at Windows start up" area select history index.dat.
Click the Apply button.
