Hi John, I like your a bit more than the one I gave even though it costs more I think it is better for a few pennies more. Thanks for posting this I will add it to my database

I originally purchased the plain IDE model, and then I had to spend more for the IDE/SATA model anyway.

Thanks guys. Vicks, good link.

So I've taken apart the laptop with seemingly no damage and decided to do a major upgrade. I'm going to upgrade the hard drive, RAM and yes, install a new DVD writer to avoid this problem another time. Is it "ok" to install it all at once? If one at a time, what's the sequence?

Thanks John, I bought one of the cables at Frys today and it works great. Unfortunately (?), I see the partitions on the drive (meaning Partition Magic didn't complete the merge) and I *do* see hal.dll on what was the C drive. Maybe it's corrupted.

Anyways, I bought a new larger HD but they didn't carry the DVD drive. I need to order that online. Is it possible to install windows onto the new HD through this USB-IDE connection and then physically install the drive into the laptop so I don't have to wait for the new DVD drive? Or am I on crack?

Shock of all shocks, something worked. When I had the HD connected via USB to my desktop I manually deleted the partition through Windows Disc Management that I wanted Partition Magic to delete. I put the HD back into the laptop, booted it up and voila. Partition Magic continued where it left off and says that the merge was done successfully. Uh huh.

I'm just wondering if it's possible to install windows on the new HD through the USB-IDE cable so I don't need to wait for the new DVD drive.

Many thanks.

Without a floppy, probably not. This USB cable is the same logically as the external drive you have.
