How to convert a Screen Shot to a JPG File?
I know how to use my "print screen" key and paste the image into Word Pad. It makes an .rtf file when I click on "save as."

But how do I convert this .rtf file into a .jpg photo file I can edit and handle as a photograph?

Copy and paste into a program like photoshop cs and then save as making sure it is set to save JPG. Or you can use any other editor for graphics.

photoshop would be your best bet, but you can use GIMP if you don't have the time/money to shell out

http://www.gimp.org/

download and install GIMP. if it's a screenshot saved to your clipboard, just open a new project and paste it. if it's a saved screenshot and open it in GIMP. when you're ready to save, hit Save As... under the File menu. under the name of the file, make sure the filetype is .JPG

You do not need any Photoshop product to save a screen shot as a JPG file.

Irfanview is free and works just fine. I'm not sure why people are recommending applications that cost hundreds of dollars for this.

You don't need to download anything if you use Windows XP, can't be bothered for other OS's.

Just hit Prnt Scrn and then go to Start>All Programs>Accessories and move your mouse down the list until you see paint and click on it. When paint opens then press Ctrl+V. Click on file and then "Save As". When a new window pops up choose the filename and change "Save as Type" to "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" then click save and you are done

For free

MWSnap, screen capture utility
http://www.mirwoj.opus.chelm.pl/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

Snagit version 7.2.5 for free: http://www.oldapps.com/SnagIT.php
Free registration: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit/ukdn.asp

It is a older version but he it is free.

I got mind and installed it. Got to learn what all it does and it does a whole lot of things and other SnagIt Accessories can be added too.

This is like a Pro program after using MWSnap and FSCapture(No longer has free version) that I still use and like and will also keep.
But Snagit does much more.
