Solved: Windows Updates won't install....
Hello.

I recently re-installed Windows XP (due to a hard-drve corruption), and everything is working fine now. However, I have the little yellow shield in the corner telling me to install these windows updates (which I never had problems with before). But now when I do it, it just says that the installtion has failed, with no explanation as to why. Can anyone help?

Go to Windows Update..., click the 'View your update history' link on the left.

You'll see a table which will tell you which updates failed, and an error code for each failed update.

Tell us what you find...

And--Welcome to TSG.

I've gone to the automatic updates bit, but I can't seem to find my update history.

Help

(Also every time I log into my profile I get an error message saying windows failed to start mom.exe. Anyone know how to solve that?)

I just tried to install the updates through the microsoft website and I got this message after they all downloaded and failed:

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed

I also found my update history and there's nothing there

Try this:

Copy the text in the blue box and paste it into a blank notepad document:

Quote:
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wucltui.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll
Click Start, Run and paste each line into the run line (one line at a time), and press enter after each.

Reboot, and try Windows Update again.

This method usually works fairly quickly and simply. Go to this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Download and install Windows Installer 3.1

It will clean out your old history and re-register the dll's necessary for installations to work. Then go back to Windows Update and try again.

Won't work if the system folder is C:\WINNT, which is what it will be for an upgrade of XP over Windows 2000.

MICKEY88 You might want to start a new thread on this problem with Windows update for two reasons

One this thread is marked solved

two it is difficult to work on two problems even though they are the same or similar in one thread it is too difficult to instruct two different people and it is against forum rules.
