I have the Windows XP reinstall disk that replaces the damaged files; not a complete reinstall from scratch. So I still had my desktop, programmes, files etc. untouched.

Thanks for your help here. It's getting late in the UK and I've had a long day so I'll pick up your reply (I hope!) tomorrow.

Can anyone help with this problem of XP updates not installing and programmes not ending when I want to shut down my laptop?

I have no idea what you're referring to. Do you mean some sort of repair disk that came with your computer?

Specifically which updates have not installed, and specifically which programs are not ending?

Thanks for getting back to me bb.

The disk is the WIndows XP Reinstallation disk.

The programme that doesn't end when I shut down/restart is Available Networks. First I get the timer bar which should close it after 30 seconds or so if I don't End Program, but then I get This Program Is Not Responding (again for Available Networks) and this stays on the screen until I close it.

The 72 updates that do not install are:

Looks like the "reinstall" is going to make us start over again.

First, uninstall the program that is not responding. You can reinstall it after we get the other problems fixed.

Now go back through the thread, and follow those steps again.

If you hit a bump in the road, post the problem, and we'll see if we can work through it.

How do I uninstall Available Networks? It's part of the Wifi, I thought; it's not a program I can uninstall through Control Panel.

Also, would it make me lose my WiFi connection so that I couldn't post any problems...?

I've just gone to Network Connections > Wireless network Connection > View Wireless Networks, then I get no wireless networks showing and "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software etc." I think networks used to show in here.

That last message then points me to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871122/en-us SHould I use this?

I was wondering if you solved this problem and if yes, then how? Im doing some work on a customers comp. I have done a restore, similiar to the one you have. Did fine and then ran into the exact problem you did, with installer not working and i clicked the link that bb posted and it did fine. It did the first set of updates fine, then on the second set (about 40 updates) would restart out of no where. Also its not overheating or anything nor is it the power supply. It wont restart if its just sitting there. When i ran spybot, it went maybe 1/3 of the way through, found 9 entries and next thing you know, it restarted. I tried to install AVAST, downloaded fine and when installing, restarted. Im thinking maybe some sort of SPYWARE or VIRUS of some sort.
