One more observation, I see in administrative tools->event logs that there is a frequent failure of DCOM... the error msg is

"DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56}

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

Thanks in advance, sumit

Welcome to TSG cheekoo

First of all what error are you getting. Do you get this error:-

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT Authority\system.

Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated unexpectedly.

If so, then the next time it happens, just do the following:-

1) Click on Start.
2) Select Run.
3) Type shutdown -a exactly as you see it here.

If you get the error I described, then this will surely solve your problem. If you get some other error, then please post it here and we will look further into it. Good Luck.

Thanks for quick reply.

I dont get any message on shutdown. And its not a proper shut down also. The laptop just turns off. No logging off, no error msgs, nothing.

I checked for bad sectors too, and checked the log, there are no bad sectors either.

Also i cant think of any program that causes this.. as this thing is very frequent and random.

Probably, this thread may act as a reference for you. The user experienced symptoms similar to yours but finally was able to resolve his problem. See if you can resolve yours too.

Laptop keeps powering down

Well cheekoo, I wanted you to try the cooling solution only. Sorry for not providing adequate information. Anyways, have you informed the office authorities about this?

thanks goku..

I think overheating is reason behind this..I have installed a software called sensor view which gives me warning when the temp of my laptop goes above 70 and that time i do something for cooling.

Either i take off the power cable and stop charging, or i keep the laptop on some other surface than lap.

This is a serious issue with laptops.. but dont know whether theres any good or robust solution or not. If you know some good solution, please let me know here..other people will also benifit by reading that.

Thanks again

(OFF-TOPIC) Do you use Steam? If you do, that 2GB of ram I bet gived you no lagg...When I use a source game, I lagg all the time...I only have 502MB of Ram, so, I'm thinking to get more, but, wether just to get enough to get to 1GB, or go the full length of 2GB ram...My computer isn't working right now, so, if I ever get it fixed I will buy more.

Two things:-

1) Please start a new thread considering your own problem. The thing you are currently doing is termed as Thread Hijacking in technical terms.

2) Please punctuate your sentences properly. It is tough to understand what you mean when you don't punctuate your sentences.

Thank you.

Having same problem
Hello,

I am having the exact same problem as you are describing: I have a Lenovo T60p with Windows XP SP2. I was experiencing the same problems that you saw several weeks ago:

1. Laptop just shut off randomly - at one point it was once a day
2. Sometimes I could not turn it back on and I had to remove the battery or just let it sit before it would come on again. Sometimes the Window logo would show up very faintly and it would hang immediately in the boot sequence.
3. Nothing in the Windows event log at the time of the failure. (BTW I had the DCOM errors; mine were due to the network card trying to share the internet connection; there are several possible reasons for these problems but you might want to look at your LAN settings).
4. Called my company's tech support they recommended I upgrade the BIOS.
5. Ran diagnostics and could not find any problems.

Like you, I noticed that when it happened it was always 1) plugged in and 2) really running hot to the touch. I haven't pursued this line of thought but it is interesting you mentioned it as I suspect that might be my problem.

6. I got my company to send me another T60 shell (no harddrive or CD/DVD). I replaced these two components andd since then the problem has happened twice (at least it is not happening every day). Same symptoms.
7. I immediately called the help desk and they suggested I discharge the capacitors (remove CD/DVD, remove battery, repeatedly hit the power button ten times and hold down the 11th time for 30 seconds). I did this and will see ift this helps. If not the only other place I have to go is make sure all the drivers are updated.

I will be curious to know if you ever find out the cause of your problem. I will let you know if I discover anything on mine .... good luck! - Jim

Hi Jim

You have jolted down exactly same problem I was facing..

I think its a known bug faced by heavy users of T60. I even got the motherboard replaced but that didnt help either...

Now i found out a workaround. I downloaded a software that gives me warnings on hogh temp. of CPU. and I take out charging cable when the temp of cpu reaches 90 and it shuts down at 95-96.

Thanks for sharung
Sumit
