My brother went to My Computer one day and saw that there was no disc drive there, it was working in the past, but now it doesn't show up, I don't think he did anything unusual. But it shows up under Safely Remove Hardware Wizard with "Samsung CD Drive" or something like that.

try this...

- start > run > sysdm.cpl
- click on "Hardware" tab
- click on "Device Manager"
- click on "Action" menu
- then click on "Scan for Hardware Changes"

see that gets your CD-ROM back...

If this is an internal CD drive - and not a USB drive, try this:

Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Copy the code below. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in a suitable location as drives.reg - making sure that the default .txt extension doesn't appear in the file name (Save as type = All Files).
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

Hi guys....I have the same problem and tried saving the registry code but when trying to "merge" it, an error message comes up "can't import it as it is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from the registry editor". Would appreciate any further help in this. Thanks!

Hello Shaun,

Re-check that you did the copy and save correctly. You may be missing the first line which is essential:
"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"
To check, right-click on the saved .reg file and click on Edit. It should look like the code posted above.
Also, make sure that the default .txt extension doesn't appear in the file name.

Hi Claymore....you're a WIZ!! Thanks heaps, it worked perfectly this time! I wasn't using the first line because a pop-up screen (advert) kept coming up when I put the cursor on "Windows", so I thought it was only a title. I got around this by copying the rest of it and then typing in 'Windows' in front of it in Notepad........many thanks and regards - Shaun.

Claymore, I followed the steps you advised. Upon save as drives.reg Vista says I do not have permission to save it as such. It offers to save it in 'Documents'. I do so and it saves in 'Drives' folder in 'Documents'. And as I am sure you know was ineffectual.

Claymore, with some help from a fellow Vista-sufferer I got past the permission thing and saved the above drives.reg file (FYI; Vista has become known for this and one simply needs to turn off the account manager to bypass.)

Anyway, I don't follow the last bit of your above instruction about double clicking "the saved .reg file to merge the contents." Exactly what reg file?
