 | Senior Member with 122 posts. | | | | Check Disc runs every time on Start-up Every time we start our computer it runs a check disc. This just started a few days ago.
Also noticed that my CD drive and DVD drive are not listed when I open "My Computer".
When I put a CD in the either drive nothing happens
Any help will be much appreciated.
(Running XP Pro SP2)
Thanks

I was thinking of doing that. Not sure if it will help. Will let you know. | | Senior Member with 1,285 posts. | | Join Date: May 2003 Location: Liverpool, UK Experience: Difficult to avoid, easy to forget. | | | | | Senior Member with 122 posts. | | | | Buck Eye 66
I tried to restore to a restore point that was crreaterd 8 days ago, but after a reboot it told me "the computer cannot be restored to the specified restore point" | | Distinguished Member with 11,853 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Experience: Advanced | | System Restore will not fix this, try the post by managed it should work. | | Senior Member with 122 posts. | | | | The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager
was already set to: autocheck autochk *
I did not try the other suggestion by Managed yet. Isn't it dangerous not to run the check disc if there really is a problem? | | Senior Member with 720 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Dublin , Ireland Experience: A+ and a little more | | The suggestion offered by managed will only stop checkdisk starting automatically on boot . It doesnt remove or disable the checkdisk tool . | | Senior Member with 1,421 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Dover FL Experience: Intermediate | | Never tried this but am told it will fix the problem.
STOP CHKDSK FROM RUNNING AT EACH BOOT. Start> Run> type: cmd then hit OK.
At the command prompt, type: chkntfs /d then hit Enter.
Restart your computer. | | Senior Member with 122 posts. | | |

#10 | Does it matter if the drive is FAT32? I noticed the command you suggest includes "NTFS"

#11 | It works on FAT32 too.
I think you should try the 2nd bit in my previous link, under 'Or else try this :' it includes a check of the drive and doesn't stop later checks from working.
Substitute the letter of the drive giving you problems for G in the instructions.
There is another paragraph under the 3 ads BTW.

#12 | I ran:
” fsutil dirty query c: “ and it told me the disk was not dirty.
Since the drive is FAT32, do I now run “CHKFAT32 /X C:” ?
For my missing CD & DVD problems I modified the registry per the Method 2 instructions @ http://support.microsoft.com/default...20might%20help, but the drives are still missing.

#14 | Well, now I am really lost.
In DeviceManager, I noticed a yellow icon on "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator".
I uninstalled the driver for "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator"
When I did a "Scan for hardware changes " nothing was found, so now "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" is no longer listed.
After a couple of days I noticed that both the "E" (DVD drive) and "F" (CD drive) are listed in "MY Computer". Device Manager says everting is OK. BUT, when I put a CD or DVD in them they both say the discs do not have any files on them (which they do). I've uninstalled and re-installed both drives and DevMgr says all is well.
I put an empty CD disc in the DVD drive and was able to copy a file to it, successful (at least that's what it told me). BUT when I looked to see if the file was on the CD, it tells me there are 0 files on it.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
