Wrong icons - only from CD or DVD
Hi

I've recently re-installed XP (SP2) and since then when I read from a CD or DVD I seem to have only 1 icon for all filetypes. Everything, folders, jpegs, text mp3s has the same icon (Internet explorer) making it very difficult to determine what the files are! If I copy the files from the CD/DVD to my hard drive the icons display correctly.

I'm sure I've probably done something very silly and would be extremely grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction so that I can regain my missing icons.

Thanks in advance.

Try doing this: Right click the Desktop, select Appearance, Effects, and uncheck 'Use Large Icons'. See if the problem goes away.

Thanx Moper, your suggestion works - but why should using large icons have this effect on the icons used when looking at the contents of a CD/DVD?

Unfortunately, I like the large icons on my desktop and turning off the large icons makes a right mess of my desktop! Can anyone suggest an alternative which would allow CD/DVDs to display the icons of their content files correctly but still allow me to use large icons on the desktop?

It is a bug from IE7 that shows up on some systems.

You may be able to have large icons, but it requires editing the registry. Try setting the 2 following keys to a value of 47.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon BPP

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size

Of course, backup the WindowsMetrics key before making changes.
Highlight WindowsMetrics. Go to File, Export. Give it a name and location.

Thanx again Moper. This has worked for me. I also increased the size of the icon cache. Now I can have my large icons on the desktop and also meaningful icons on CD/DVD!
