Exclamation Solved: "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be closed" !!!!PLEASE HELP!!!!
Hello there...

First of all i want you all to be a little patient with me... this is my first post in this forum. My problem other than complicated i think its very common. When I'm trying to install or uninstall a program my windows installer fails and a pop up window comes up saying "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be closed"

Error Signature:
AppName: msiexec.exe AppVer: 3.1.4000.1823 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00018fea

I've tried every known method on the net to try to fix this but i cant get a solution

1. Update Windows
2. Used the method "msiexec /unregister" "msiexec /regserver"
3. I'm using the latest version of Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)
4. I also tried the programs "Registry Mechanic" and "CCleaner" to clean up my computer of temp files and to clean up my registry editor
5. i CAN'T scan my computer for Trojans, viruses or ad ware... and thats because what I'm trying to install is my Kaspersky Anti virus.
6. I downloaded the tool "Windows Installer Clean Up" but no good because i cant install it.
7. I've tried to install many programs and no luck

The truth here is that I'm desperate with this problem, and I'm tired of trying and trying and don't get a REAL solution. Please guys help me fix this, I'm really going nuts... Here's my E-mail if someone wants to help me online: juanda.ru@hotmail.com

THANK YOU GUYS

First, post a HijackThis scanlog >>

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html

>> After doing that, try running the installer in a clean boot mode and see if it works >>

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310353
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

>> If it doesn't work in a clean boot -- try running chkdsk on the drive and have it repair any errors.

>> you can also try enabling the Installer Logging and check for details on any errors there >>

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300

The last part of the log will be the most important.

Well I don't see any "malware" in the scanlog.

The msiexec.exe module is faulting in NTdll.dll -- and anything begining with "NT" can be assumed to be a file system issue of some kind.

http://www.instant-registry-fixes.or...dlldll-errors/

It may be an "access denied" one for some reason -- if so I believe that will be one issue caught by the verbose logging file when it is created. What you will be looking for there is to see what the installer is doing or trying to access when it fails. Usually there is an error or two preceeding the final "I give up" message.

And another reason to run chkdsk on the drive as well.

Do try the clean boot -- you never know when there might be a conflict with something running.

And just in case there might be something malicious hiding -- there are online scanners you can run -- Kaspersky has one, and so does Trend (HouseCall).

That's great -- clue me in on what it was though -- since it is rather unusual and I'd like to know who the culprit was

You're most welcome for the help!

You can also mark the thread Solved using the Thread Tools menu, by the way.

Well I'm not actually sure what the problem was... It had something to do with these start up programs:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Archivos de programa\Archivos comunes\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Archivos de programa\Archivos comunes\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acrobat Assistant 8.0] "C:\Archivos de programa\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

So i disabled them... and that worked for me and my windows installer...

Well I'm not sure which it would be myself, unless it was one of the installshield "update" entries.

Try re-enabling them a half at a time if you want to narrow it down.

None of them really should have been an issue.
