I'm not sure what the process is for this. I bought a computer from CyberPower and chose no OS (or monitor) because I already have Windows XP, which I plan to continue using until Vista is stable. Usually my son does this kind of thing for me, but he is on a trip.

All of my Windows have been upgrades since ME. I upgraded to 98 and then to XP Home. I know I'm not supposed to have my XP on more than one computer, however I want to get my new computer set up before I stop using this old one. I have all the product keys for the three Windows. My need is just how to proceed. Do I need to install any Windows before inserting the XP disk, or is it "user friendly". I don't know what to expect.

Outside of knowing how to plug in my new computer, I'm not experienced enough to know what to do next. I know I can activate XP for 30 days, so that should cover the time I need to get the computer up and running and make sure it's all ok within the 30 day period I have to return anything not working. After using my new computer disk and OS disk, what else will be required to check the system? I use a cable provider, but won't plug that in yet. The computer has all components except the OS, and I will have to plug this monitor into it, too.

If your Xp disc is an Upgrade Only, this will mean it is not bootable and you will therefore need to Install the operating system that is bootable first.

Steps:
Install the Windows version that is on a bootable disc (that starts the computer)
Install Windows Xp Upgrade
Install Service Pack 2 (if the upgrade didn't install it)
Install all motherboard drivers (that came with the new computer)
or download all the drivers live
Install any other addon drivers: - modem; printer ...
You can also install Office and Adobe and even Adobe Flash

You cannot install Internet Explorer 7 or any other MS updates until activated

As another helpful hint

If you go over your 30 days (without activation) do the following:

In this example: Your activation period has expired, (past 30 days) and you need to get to Normal mode again.

1. Turn On your PC

2. Press F8 repeatedly and go to Safe Mode

3. Logon as per normal
(note: Administrator password is usually blank, but hopefully you know your password)

4. Allow the Desktop to fully load (answering "Yes" to continue into Safe Mode)
(note: This is just a long way of saying go to Safe Mode)

5. Click on Start - Run

6. Type in exactly: rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (and click OK)
(note: one space, after "rundll32.exe " also the Oo are two letter o's in "oobe"; capitals and comma are important)

7. Wait a couple of seconds (although you will Not see any change)

8. Restart your PC normally (Start - Shutdown - Restart - Ok)

9. You are now able to go to Normal Mode again (For another 30 days !!!)

10. Do whatever you like, you're back to Normal.

That is some kind of offical way to reset the Activation Trial.
Take Care it will work only work for about 4 times. (120 days in total !!!!!!)
Do not use on an already activated PC (as it may reset it )

This command line (Activation Reset) has been fully tested, and 100% working.

Thanks for answering. Unfortunately, my ME is also an upgrade, but from what I don't remember since it was so long ago. Wow, guess I should have chosen an OS for the new computer and saved myself this headache.

Because an upgrade on an upgrade and then Windows Xp is Not very clean

The upgrade disk should boot up and if it does then all you need is a legal windows disk to verify the upgrade and it then proceeds like a normal installation. One other thing you will need is or are the special drivers for the motherboard chipset and other drivers and you can get them from the drivers disk that should have come wioth the computer and hopefully they will be for windows XP and also prebably vista, you will use the windows xp drivers for this.

If you mean a legal Windows disk, the XP is legal, just an upgrade. And Windows 98 is an upgrade from Windows ME, which was an upgrade from what I don't remember. It was so long ago. Anyway, I do have the product keys and I think I read someplace that all XP will ask for is the product key from the Windows version being upgraded. I will check this out later today.

This is correct
If it is you can use it
During install it will ask for the full version of an earlier Windows , full, CD

Oh, and my XP upgrade cd is bootable. Not sure where you get your information.....but, you might test what you post

Please show me a legit XP upgrade cd that isn't bootable........I certainly may be wrong on that, and will be willing to admit so...........

And anytime you CUT AND PASTE, it's a COMMON courtesy that you should link the source, otherwise it looks like YOUR work. In many places they call that plagiarism..........probably even where you live.

XP upgrade cd is always bootable Candy, you are quite right.
