svchost.exe constantly using 50% cpu
I'm not an HJT logfile expert, so I will not even look at the file. There are those that are trained in reading the logfile.

You may want to download Process Explorer (freeware) here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...sExplorer.mspx

No need to install just run the .exe

There are usually many instances of svchost.exe running. In Process Explorer, hover your mouse the svchost.exe that is using the high CPU usage. A menu will open showing you which processes are running in that particular svchost. Go to Services and stop each service one at a time that is listed in this particular svchost. If the cpu usage continues, start the stopped service and continue on till svchost.exe shows normal cpu usage.

My guess it is the Indexing Service causing the problem. But, then again, it's just a guess.

Don't stop any services necessary for Windows to operate such as the RPC Service.

I use Process Explorer instead of Task Manager.

By the way, have you ran any spyware/virus scans lately?

Hope this helps.

I'll try the Process Explorer this evening. I have cox provided antivirus and spyware running all the time and ocasionall I'll do a scan with both. I've never found any problems. I downloaded the HijackThis a few days ago and ran it. I also downloaded Search and Distroy and have it running now. Thanks.

I heard somewhere that if svchost is using more CPU than explorer you most likely have a problem.
Here is something else I found:
Quote:
Note: The svchost.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. In other cases, svchost.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!

I ran the sExplorer program and it identified the process using all the cpu; it was HPLSPSVE which is HP Network Devices Support. I read up on it on an HP forum and found many people have this problem with various models of HP printers. A solution was given and it worked perfectly. Following is the soluton I followed:
To resolve the problem:
start --> run --> services.msc
- above brings services UI
- Right click on "HP Network Device Support" service,
- select property.
- in Startup type pulldown menu, changeto "Manual" from "Automactic".
- You are good to go.
I hope this helps someone else that views this. Thank you for pointing out the sExporer program.

svchost.exe constantly using 50% cpu
Glad you were able to identify the problem and take care of it. Process Explorer is a good program. As I stated in my previous post, I use it in lieu of Task Manager.

Thanks for posting the fix.
