Windows System Notification Sound plays randomly
My computer has recently started playing the System Notification sound
that is defined as Windows XP Balloon.wav in the Sounds and Audio
Device Properties at seemingly random intervels, and I cannot seem to
find out what application is triggering the playing of this sound. I am
sure it is this sound specifically as I changed it up and the change
was reflected in the sound that was playing. I have also been checking
the event viewer under Administrative tools and haven't noticed any
events that correspond with the issue at hand. It's slowly driving me
crazy!

Thank you guys so much in advance for your help, I have heard a ton of good stuff about your forums and thought I would give it a try. Thanks again!

See if that sound is under Windows "Exclamation". I had that problem one time and that is what was happening.

I'm sorry i'm not quite sure what you are referring to by that post.

My issue is with the windows System Notification sound, not with a sound labeled exclamation.

And just as an update I am quite aware that I could simply turn the sound off, but I want to find the source of the sound so if windows really does need to get my attention in the future the sound will play at an appropriate time.

Thanks again to everyone for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Under Windows sounds. XP Baloon wav is one sound for selection. See if it is there.

You see, if I wanted to I could turn off the sound, but I don't want to turn off the sound I just want to find out what is triggering it so I can make whatever is triggering it stop.

And for clarification the sound is windows XP balloon.wav under the program event System notification.

Thank you so much for responding to my post however! I really do appreciate it.

JimmyBlaze - I have the same issue/question (intermittent system notification sound). Seems like it started within the past 5-8 days. FWIW, I had recently downloaded and installed the "trial" version of PhotoShop Elements, so I uninstalled it. That did not resolve the issue.

Question annoying random system notification sound
Hi, recently having the same issue. So far, I think it's related to nod32.
I downloaded File monitor (filemon) and Process Monitor (procmon) from sysinternals.
That system notification sound gets played everytime nod32kui.exe creates a thread, right after doing what I presume is checking some sort of cache files.
That's all what I've found, don't know if this means there's something wrong, googling for this has given no results except for some suggestions to associate no sound for the event.
Do you use nod32?
Is someone else having similar problems?
Does someone have a clue about this?

Thanks for your reply, I will keep paying attention to the nod32 process, I will post if I find something worth commenting. I'm very puzzled about this. Meanwhile, here are some of the programs I have running in the background. Do you happen to have some of these?
Nod32 V2.7
Comodo Firewall 3.0
uTorrent (not always)
Also, mine is WinXP SP2 with Crystal Clear Bricopack installed. No Automatic Updates (I like it stable)

Anyways I haven't made any changes to my setup and I think this annoyance began about two weeks ago, I didn't pay attention to it since I thought it was related to utorrent downloading something or comodo firewall.
By now, I'm planning on uninstalling comodo since it is the latest addition to my system.
BTW: I don't think this is because of malware, but one can never be so sure...
I'll keep posting.

asutra- I have NOD32 v2.7 running on XP Pro SP2. I do not have Comodo Firewall or uTorrent. Thanks for pursuing this.

Hi, HGR3inOK
So far, my system has been really quiet, I uninstalled Comodo and turned on balloon tips. So everytime nod32 tells me it's updated, the system notification sound gets played along with the balloon tip.
Do you have balloon tips on?
