Help! BSOD w/ Error 0x0000009c
Hello, I was hoping if anyone could help me diagnose a recurring problem I've been having with my computer. I just did a fresh format hoping to rid myself of these BSODs but I'm still getting them quite frequently now, and they always seems to occur when I am running multiple programs (usually a video game and IE in the background) or if there's lots of sound going on (like in video games and music). This kind of hints to me that it could be my sound card or my RAM, but running several memtests on the RAM has shown no signs of anything wrong. My current setup is:

Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+
Patriot 1GB PC3200 400MHz (2x512MB) Dual Channel DDR
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS 256mb
Soundblaster Audigy SE

I have also attached the minidumps too. I tried to read them myself with the dumpchk but I had no idea how to use it once it was installed If anyone can please help me diagnose this problem I would appreciate it so much. Thanks.

Here's something to check out while you're waiting for someone to check your dump file:

Thanks, I looked it up so at least I think it has nothing to do with my sound card now but either the CPU, motherboard, or RAM... I think maybe a compatibility issue but I still don't really have a clue.

Did your computer come with: Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+
Patriot 1GB PC3200 400MHz (2x512MB) Dual Channel DDR
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS 256mb
Soundblaster Audigy SE
Or is did you make changes (example..switch out RAM, new video card? any overclocking?).

Also, have you checked in device manager (under properties of my computer) to see if the drivers and devices are ok?

I would also check in event viewer in administrative tools in control panel. Check the system log...double click anything that has an error and see what information you can get from that.

I'm hoping Rollin" Rog sees this and can check your dump file for you...

My most recent upgrade was my RAM, from a set of OCZ 1gb Dual Channel. Originally I thought it was the OCZ set that was causing the problem because it's always recommended to run all sticks of the same RAM so I left them out when I swapped them for the Patriots but unfortunately, I'm still getting the error. I've also upgraded my processor and my video card about 6 months ago, but before the upgrade I still had BSODs which oddly enough, happened more frequently. That's why I thought it may have been my soundcard, because it's been the only hardware that I haven't upgraded other than the motherboard (which could be faulty to start). I do keep all my drivers up to date, but I think I've installed the wrong driver for my soundcard so I'm about to roll it back. Ironically, when I was going to the event viewer to read the system log, my computer got the blue screen Yeah... this error has just been a huge pain for me.

Edit: Added minidump archive with the new minidump I just got.

Run msinfo32 and look at your IRQ assignments under Hardware Resources for what is on IRQ 18

Quote:
Debugging Details:
------------------

NOTE: This is a hardware error. This error was reported by the CPU
via Interrupt 18. This analysis will provide more information about
the specific error. Please contact the manufacturer for additional
information about this error and troubleshooting assistance.

Hello,

I checked the msinfo32 under IRQ18 and I got this:
VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

I hope this helps. Thanks.

That's a FireWire hub/port controller.

Do you have anything on it such as an external drive?

By the way, you were asked about "overclocking" -- I didn't see an answer.

For what it's worth, I don't know how significant the interrupt level is -- I just thought it might be significant, but on further review of 9c bugchecks -- it appears all are similar with respect to that

Have you had a close look at the board for bad caps?

http://www.badcaps.net/ident/

There is a page here that also discusses 9c errors >>

No sir, I've never used that port since I've had this motherboard. Should I disable it just in case?

Oh and no, I've never overclocked any of my computers.

Okay, I'll take a look at the capacitators right now and see if there's anything wrong going on there. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it very much.

The more I have looked at 9c bugchecks -- the less I think that when it says the CPU reports the error on interrupt 18, that it is actually referring to a device on that interrupt.

However it shouldn't hurt to disable the device -- I removed an old firewire card from my XP system just to free up a PCI slot.

Have you ruled out overheating?

It's possible the CPU itself is damaged, or it's cached memory.
