Try This

Start > Run > Sysdm.cpl > Advanced Tab > Under "Performance" Click Settings > Visual Effects Tab > UnCheck "User Drop Shadows For Icon Labels On The Desktop"

That didnt seem to do anything atall. The problem is when I single click on a desktop icon such as "my computer" for example , a grey box appears appears behind the text to show its highlighted.

I wanna get it off the crappy grey colour and have it black , but I cant find how to change this.Im sure I remember changing it on windows 98 but cant for the life of me do it on XP.

1.Rick click on the desktop
2. Click on "Properties"
3. Click the "Appearance" tab
4. Click on "Advanced"
5. In the dropdown choose "Selected Items"
6. Change "Color1" to the color you want
