error 1402 hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
hi all,

im new here. i've looked but couldnt find a previous solution to this request. and if im in the wrong section i appologise.

my problem is this. i lent my laptop to my brother and somehow he managed to get some kinda malware or spyware on it. he then ran a removal tool online but cant remember which one he used. it deleted several files including some registry entries. so now when i try to install anythin i get the message..

error 1402 hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

it says i dont have permissions so i checked the registry and i get an error saying it "cannot open Run. Error opening key" when i click on the run folder.

ive surfed the net found a few fixes none have worked. so far ive tried a reg fixer, system restore and even went as far as to repair install windows but nothin worked.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
thank you

thats kinda weird because acording to this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179365 its a run once key... and if a system repair and restore didnt work then your almost SOL... you might be able to pull that single value out of another system, then input it into yours... are you sure you punched regedit into run right? because thats weird that it wont work... maybe you werent the admin...

hey guys that was a speedy reply thank you.

i just finished reseting the registry permissions but it never fixed the problem. its starting to look like im gunna be spendin the weekend doing a clean install of windows doh!

as for what you said daniel, i checked and i definately am admin. and i thought all registrys were unique but ill maybe try gettin it from my pc later.

oh i just remembered when i did the repair install of windows some of the files couldnt be found on the cd. even though they were clearly there ( i clicked browse ). i wonder if downloading sp2 from ms instead of the cd would help. ill go try i guess.

thanks again for the help. if theres anythin else you think i could try would be great to know thanks

Right click the Run key and click Permissions. If you see an error saying you don't have permission to view the current permissions but you do have permission to change them, click OK to change them.

If Windows opens the Permissions window without error, look to see if the Administrators group is shown.

If it is, click to highlight the Administrators group and make sure no boxes are checked in the Deny column, and make sure Full control and Read are checked in the Allow column.

If the Administrators group is not shown, click Add and then in the lower box type administrators then click OK. Then follow the instructions in the paragraph above.
