Is this a new install of Word?
Have you ever been able to use the program?
Have you tried to reinstall?

I have 1Gb RAM with 550Mb free and 2Ghz Turion with 7Gb free space on the system partition and 15Gb free space in the other partition

What is using the other half of the system RAM?

That is 474 Mb RAM used for what?
