Other things to try...

Start>Run>type in taskmgr
Right click on taskbar>select taskmanager

What exactly do you mean that it's gone? You may want to do a file search for Taskmgr.exe and see if the file exists. First go into Folder Options>View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)", click Apply/OK.

If you go to the link below and under the letter "T" and scroll down to "Task Manager - Control/Alt/Delete - Doesn't work" you'll find several possible fixes.

Go to the link below and scroll down to line 51 (right column) and click on "Enable the Task Manager" and download the reg file and save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt, then restart your computer.

Did you do a file search like I recommended in my previous reply and did you find that file?

taskmanager disabled by the administrator
Or try this

start/ run , copy and paste this into run

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

click on OK

now retry task manager

good luck

rasikh, GPEDIT.MSC (Group Policy Editor) isn't available on XP Home Edition only on Windows XP Pro. gambie1 appears to be running Windows XP Home according to his computer specs in his first post.

Do you have any other unusual symptoms? Constant "error" appearing in the lower right of the screen about a security issue, or a change in your wallpaper?

There is a family of malware that disables the task manager, that also causes these other symptoms ... do you have current security software, and have you done a scan recently?
