XP-SP3 Installation Crash
Well, I decided to make the move and give SP3 a try, I shouldn't have bothered!

All went well, and the system rebooted, well into the boot sequence I was greeted by a blue screen:

STOP: C0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}
The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitSize could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll.

Naturally, I fired up Acronis True Image and restored this morning's image, but I figure at some point they'll try to push this update down on patch Tuesday...

Just curious if anyone else has seen something similar? Any other issues after installing SP3 for other folks here?

When I first saw that title, my first thought was, "Great! Another beta downloader who probably even read the warning, installed it anyway, and now has no idea how to recover so comes whining to us!" But then I saw the sig and knew that it was not that.

Where'd you get it? I don't see it in a brief search, so maybe TechNet? I mean the whole thing, of course. I found the web downloader easily.)

I converted my XP to a VMWare image and moved it to my Vista system, so I'm curious to see how SP3 will install in a VM.

John: Seems you're not the only one with this problem. See here

I downloaded this from MSDN a couple of weeks ago, figured right after the image backup was a good time to test it. I'm sure glad I had a backup.

Interesting link, apparently something about the update is screwed up. I can wait until they release SP3a I think.

That's odd, I have had it on 2 pc's for weeks with no issue and a bunch on my forum have also done it with no issues at all. Many of them claim to see great increase in speed but that I see none of.

Well, what can I say, I'm only a sample of one. All I can say is the system was running fine, and I launched the SP3 install, and upon the reboot I had a blue screen.

JW I was looking and did not see finished SP3 for XP. Did you get it from tech net or were you using Rc2?

I have installed RC2 on two installations with no difficulty. About the only thing I've noticed is that there far fewer Security Updates for SP3 on patch Tuesday; one or two at most, and one of them is usually the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Well, upon checking, it was indeed RC2, and I've removed it from my disk. I'll wait for the "official" release and see if they fixed that issue.

How long will we keep hearing about this SP3? It was supposed to be released at the middle of April. Are you all talking about the beta version?

What will happen when it gets out? Will it be an update of SP2 that will be downloaded to your computer automatically through Windows update? Will we be able to just keep on updating SP2 independently, or SP3 IS a SP2 update?

SP3 will be a Service Pack update and probably through Windows Update site and also as a separate download as well with an orderable cd. It was supposed to be out already.

I did a search on MSDN, and I don't see a release version, so obviously I didn't have the true release copy.

Remember when they released SP2? Hell on Earth wasn't it! Millions of bugs, drivers not working anymore... The wise decision at the time was to wait a few months before upgrading, wich I did. Will it be the same with SP3? Should we wait a few months before trying it?

Based on my experience, I'd have to say yes.
