Out of Memory at Line: 528--a Windows search bar problem
So every time that I try to open my search box thing (start->search) a message pops up that says: "Out of memory at line: 528".

This sucks because (one) I can't search for anything and (two) I have a virus that I need to search for.

I have XP.

You probably need to address the virus issue first and foremost and I would suggest posting in the Malware forum for that, including a HijackThis scanlog. Then repost here once you are clean if the problem continues.

Try disabling the search indexer on the "change preferences" menu.

You can also do it by running services.msc and stopping and disabling the Indexing Service

See also "Search Doesn't Work" on how to reinstall it from the site below; select "S" then look for the above title.

I tried to re-install it, and it looked like it did it, but then I tried to open up the search thing and I got the same error message.

A non Microsoft application which is installed on your computer uses an outdated kernel mode driver or filter.

Since you mention a virus , this is probably the culprit.

Have you posted a hijackthis log on the malware board so an expert can help identify it and tell you what specialized removal tools you need and what manual follow up is required?

Most likely it is going to be a .sys file involved.

I'm going to close this thread -- if clearing the virus does not solve the problem -- just start another one -- but having two open at the same time and dealing with a dirty system will not get us anywhere.
