can't find any harddrives- Windows reinstall
Ok, i'm trying to reinstall windows, and i'm following this guide http://www.windowsxphome.windowsrein...exfullpage.htm

But I get the message that it can't find any hard drives so I did as I was told here
http://www.windowsxphome.windowsrein...exfullpage.htm

and downloaded what I believe to be the correct driver for my A8V-E Deluxe motherboard. The description of the download is VIA VT6420 (VT8237) SATA RAID Driver Package Version 4.30C & 64bit XP/2003(WHQL). It says its for Windows XP too, not just the 64bit version

so I downloaded it, extracted the files, now what? The tutorial says to "copy the extracted files, (Or downloaded file) onto a blank floppy disk" But theres like 100 files in the folder, which one(s) do I copy to the floppy disk? When I tried the wrong files, it said it couldn't find txtsetup.oem on the floppy. I found 2 files with that name, one found in the folder 6420RAID > disk > txtsetup.oem

-and another-

6420RAID > disk > AMD64 > txtsetup.oem

I know I have an AMD 64 for my PC

Any help as to where to go from here would be invaluable. Thanks

Is your hard drive PATA (IDE) or SATA? If it is SATA, in the BIOS Setup Advanced > Onboard Device Configuration menu, under SATA Mode choose IDE (not RAID).

Under the Boot menu, you need to specify the boot device priority. And if you have multiple hard drives, which one to boot.

In this mode you do not need to download any SATA drivers or use a floppy containing RAID drivers.

its SATA.

I was told to set the boot priority to have the CD drive first. Should I change it?

I must say, I'm surprised at what you're proposing. I don't doubt you, it just seems odd to switch it to IDE instead of SATA, the one I have

thanks for your reply

Look for similar wording in the BIOS, it probably won't be exactly the same and you aren't choosing IDE exactly, you are choosing IDE emulation on the SATA controller so you don't need to load the SATA or RAID drivers. If you don't have the emulation choice in the BIOS you will probably have to press F6 early in the install as it says it is inspecting your system (It'll say press F6 at the bottom of the screen) and then load your drivers by floppy (or other means if allowed) so Windows can see the drives and continue the proper installation.

It is described starting on page 4-18 in the manual: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...v-e_deluxe.pdf

Thank you.

Now that I've reinstalled windows and everything, should I set it back to SATA?

Also, regarding the boot priority, should I set it back to have the hard drive first? And, I noticed that there is a max of 4 devices that you can set to boot. It lists hard disk twice. Should I make it so it just does it once?

No don't set it back to SATA (Windows won't see the drive again).

Regarding the boot priority, you can leave it CD then HDD. Or having the HDD first will speed the boot process slightly. Regarding the hard disk listed twice, I haven't a clue. Do you have two hard drives installed?

Bios
I get the same problem. I am rebuilding a system with an ABit V17 motherboard in it. However, when I press F6 for the SATA driver floppy, it says 'cannot find txtsetup.oem'. The BIOS I'm using has got the SATA RAID Rom set to disabled (I'm not using RAID!), the Onboard IDE Controller set to Enabled. However, it still comes up with the same message. Why is this?

You don't need to press F6 for you BIOS configuration. As far as Windows Setup knows, you have an IDE drive.

Solved it!
Just to let you know I've solved it, what I was doing is:
I downloaded the drivers and extracted them
downloaded the driver folder to a floppy
it couldn't find txtsetup.oem because they were in a folder, so I went into the folder, and copied the individual files, and it worked!
