Slow Shortcuts/File Associations
1st let me say that I have a FAST PC. It is a Dell XPS710 w/4GB. When I think it is slow, I go back to my old PC and wait and wait and wait.

The following "slowness problems" don't always happen. Sometimes they work as they are supposed to, but that's less than 10% of the time.

1) If I have a shortcut on the desktop to a place on the Internet, it can take over a minute for that page on the Internet to appear. It does not matter whether my Explorer or Firefox browser is used. Once sucessfully on the Internet, clicking on any links there behaves normally. If I click on the Explorer or Firefox icons directly, I get rapid response.

2) If I click on an office file (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), it can take over a minute for that document to open. Curiously, that is not a problem when I click on a jpeg file. It does happen for other non-Microsoft program file associations as well, e.g. Datapilot.

3) In Outlook, if I have a link to an internet site in a message, it takes forever to open. If there is an attached document, it is much faster to copy or save the file somewhere, start the associated program and then go open the file. Trying to open the file in Outlook takes forever.

This has been pretty much the case since I bought the PC.

I have XP Media Center Edition with all the latest updates which was installed when I got the PC.

I kinda expected McAfee, but can't find any similar problems listed in other McAfee related sites. Besides, why would it be slower trying to make a file association than opening the file in the application?

BTW: No Error Messages

Thanks for any help!
