My Pavillion computer mother board let out its smoke and stopped working.
The local repair shop moved all the hardware (HD,CD drive,etc) into a new tower with
an ASUSTeK motherboard. The OS is the HP Pavilion XP w/sp2 and auto update
functioning. I burned a set of recovery CDs (7 to the set) and have a copy of SP2 CD.
The system is starting to bog down on startup and shut down. I would like to get my ducks in a row before I start to do a total cleanup (reformat and reload).
I have 400GB USB drive to use for backup of recommended programs and lots of time.
Is there a location that might have step by step on how to use the (7)recovery disks
and sp2 (sp3 if I can download it).
This is also a learning excersize for me since I know enough to be dangerous.

Appreciate any suggestions. (even 'don't do it')

If you are looking to just run the recovery CDs, all you need to do is insert the first disk (Disk 1) and boot from the disk. Afterwords, just follow the on screen instructions.

The recovery program will run automatically and tell you when to open your CD tray to insert the next disk. From there, just take out the disk and insert the next one without turning off the PC.

Please keep in mind that all of your current data and programs on your hard disk will be lossed. However, if successful, your original factory system setup should be installed. Also keep in mind that it might take a few hours (experience )

If the motherboard was replaced with a non-HP branded board, the recovery disks may not work. Did the repair shop use them when they replaced the motherboard? With that big of a hardware change, it's not really an HP Pavillion computer anymore.

The retail version is slightly more....benefits include being able to upgrade the system basically at will....and moving the copy to a new computer, the Retail versions are not married to the first pc....
