 | Junior Member with 3 posts. | | | | Runtime error 21 at 014D49D2 This message pops up twice every time I boot my computer now. It occurred completely randomly. My computer was good last night and not tonight. I ran CCleaner and a few virus scans and haven't been able to get rid of it.
It pops up the two boxes at startup and windows is completely frozen until I close the top one. I can then use my computer normally with the second error box present. If I click the second box, Explorer reboots and both boxes reappear. I system restored to a week prior to no avail. I ran selective startup with only essential items without it working. I am out of ideas and I haven't been able to google anything pertaining to my specific error. I found other runtime error 21's, but they were followed by 004 or something else.
A few lists I've seen of common windows runtime errors don't even list 21.
So in conclusion, I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it. Please help. It doesn't come up when I try to open any program, just when Windows boots.
Thanks. | | Junior Member with 2 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: Intermediate | | Same deal! I'm having the exact same problem as the OP, however, when i close the both boxes and my desktop refreshes the error number changes remaining: Runtime Error 21 at xxxxxxxx the xs refer to the changing address, cant find anything when i google them except free trial scans(tried to no avail) an answer would be appreciated.

It started after I clicked something from facebook, as well. I have done numerous virus scans, etc. but nothing comes up.
It's not a huge problem, since I can use my computer as long as I don't hit ok on the second message, but it's really annoying. | | Junior Member with 4 posts. | | | | I also have JUST STARTED to receive this error 'combo' - and MY daughter was in her FACEBOOK account just prior to this as well.
What can we do about it ?
You CAN keep working as long as the 2nd "Error box" is left open, but this is BS !!!! | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | | | Yes same by me I had the scenario that caused the problem. Do you know if anyone logged the issue with Facebook? Before going to work this morning I had Norton Internet Security do a full system scan. | | Junior Member with 2 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: Intermediate | | Facebook!! Mine also happened after being on facebook so something is clearly hidden on there site, however i resolved my issue with a simple system restore and not seen the problem again i am currently scanning to see if the problem is still hidden on my computer somewhere but i am no longer getting the error messages and my computer is operating as normal, hope that helps in some way. | | Junior Member with 2 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: Intermediate | | My system restore option was turned off, is there any other way to get rid of this extremely annoying runtime error? | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: Intermediate |

#10 | SAme story: facebook, 2 popups, etc.
As soon as I realised that it was gonna be a virus, I started opened Task Manager and started ending any processes which used more than 0 % memory. I think that only did harm. I then restarted the computer right away.
I tried System Restore and it didn't work all it said was something like "cannot restore becuse no chages have been made."
Does anybody even know and details about it, like if it has a file nameor even better, how to kill it? | | Junior Member with 4 posts. | | |

#11 | A System Restore seems to work against this . . . I ran a FULL McAfee scan; found absolutely NOTHING.
I then took newb25's advice & did a System Restore [using a restore point date from 3 or 4 days ago] and that appears to have resolved the issue.
Since FACEBOOK appears to be a common link - in at least 3 or 4 of us reporting the issue in this forum - I would be very careful next time there (or tell your child - as I have - to be cautious as to WHAT he/she 'clicks' on while on the FACEBOOK site).
And someone with a FB logon should probably report this/these incidents to the FB Web Administrator/Customer Service, etc., and make THEM aware of it (they probably already have been told, but it never hurts to add more information, in a case like this !).

#13 | Solved For me, at least.
The picture I opened which led to the problem had an executable, or .exe, file name: picture_dl.exe
After I figured out that was the cause of the problem, I immediately deleted the file where it had been saved. That didn't stop the problem, because it had saved in another location.
If you do a system search ("search" in your start menu) for the program name, it may or may not be the same as mine, there should be another instance of it. If you delete that, the problem should stop.
If that isn't your error, this problem/runtime error basically comes from your explorer program shutting down and restarting. If you google search "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted." you should find other solutions. | | Account Disabled with 332 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: intermediate to advanced |
