Solved: Windows update no longer works
So I can't update windows or anything. I can't gt automatic updates to start. When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.... Help?

I'm on windows xp home edition.

I tried that it is still not working..
The other 2 are on start, but I can't get the automatic updates to start through services.msc... I've clicked manual then start..but it still won't start it just gives me an error saying what I put in first post.

[Error number: 0x8DDD0018]
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
If this does not resolve the problem you may request help from one of the following resources.

If you still have the problem try this. It worked for me.

FIX FOR WINDOWS UPDATE WUAUSERV PROBLEM
Click on Start -> run -> type command: cmd and command prompt will appear. After you are in command prompt try the following commands.

net stop wuauserv
cd /d C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
rd /s DataStore
net start wuauserv
Now try the service again

When I tried to stop it it said:

C:\Documents and Settings\user>net stop wuauserv
The Automatic Updates service is not started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.
System error 1058 has occurred.

Then when I tried to start it it said:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has n
o enabled devices associated with it.

Ah...your site doesn't work in firefox.....i tried it in IE now..well I c/p'd it into notepad then saved it then ran it..and I pressed OK to the first popup and then the next one gave me an error:

DllRegisterSerer in wuaueng.dll failed. Return code was:0x80070430

Later I got

C:\Documents and Settings\user>net stop wuauserv
The Automatic Updates service is not started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.

Then type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution does not exist on my computer...can that be a problem?

Then later

C:\Documents and Settings\user> net start wuauserv
System error 1058 has occurred.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has n
o enabled devices associated with it.

I have one computer that this fixed the problem. Somehow the files needed had been removed from the computer.
