Can anyone help?!

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. Probably 4 years old now. I use it primarily for design programs - Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop - and general usage (internet, email, word processing, music).

I recently added 2GB of memory because it was moving at a snail's pace (it had less than 1GB installed - it took literally an hour or more just to save a single Photoshop file). But things aren't *that* much better. RAM shows 55.7GB used and 15.5GB available.

I have NOT used "disk cleanup" or "defragment" because I'm just not sure what that really does to my files - I can't afford for anything to be deleted or unusable. I delete things when I can, or just move them to my external harddrive, but I'm about where I generally operate.

I have done a full system backup with a 500GB external harddrive.

I'm not a complete know-it-all when it comes to computers, but I'm pretty well-read. I can generally fix about anything, within reason, but this has me stumped.

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate the help!
