Kernel_data_inpage_error
Hi
For the last few months, I have been having a problem with my computer. It happens sporadically and started occurring only a few times a week, but gradually increased to the point of happening several times a day.

The Current Problem:
A black screen with white lettering that says "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" and "Stop: 0x0000007A(0xC070C6B0, 0xC0000185, 0xE18D691E,0x17D358C0)".

Up until a few days ago i was getting a different error message that changed to this one after I updated Windows from service pack 2 to service pack 3. The previous error message read on a black screen with white lettering "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" and "Stop: 0x00000077(0xC0000185, 0xC0000185, 0x00000000, 0x04F58000)".

On both error messages it also said at the bottom "Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete." and then rebooted on its own a few seconds after appearing, or remained on the screen until I manually reboot it.

My Computer Specifications: (as stated by system properties)

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Computer:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
3000+
2.00 GHz 512 MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

(If any more information is needed about my system to solve the problem, just ask and I will try to provide it)

Fixing Attempts: (what I remember and not in order)

1. Ran chkdsk /f /r - no problems found
2. Ran Windows RAM check on a floppy - no problems found
3. Ran HD Tune Pro 3.10 on all its abilities - no problems found
4. Updated from SP2 to SP3 - after that I stopped seeing "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" and started seeing "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR"
5. Defragmented the hard drive - nothing error related was fixed
6. Freed up 25 Gigs on hard drive - nothing error related was fixed
7. Ran numerous virius scans - nothing error related was fixed

The problem seems to happen more often when I am running a game or complex program which made me think it was the RAM, but all RAM checks turned up negative. (one stick of 512mb)

I also had a problem before both of these that had gone on for about 6 months. The computer would just simply shut down without any of these messages. It also seemed to also occur more often when running a game/complex program. It stopped after I took my computer to a repairman and they ran a series of major hard drive cleaning programs and virius scans. afterwards the computer ran fine for about a month, and then the first of my new problems started happening (kernel_stack). I would guess that there is a good chance that these problems are linked somehow.

A picture of the current error message is below

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Both of these errors could be a failing hard drive, I suggest you back up any important data before doing anything else.

0x00000077: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A page of kernel data requested from the pagefile could not be found or read into memory. This message also can indicate disk hardware failure, disk data corruption, or possible virus infection.

0x0000007A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A page of kernel data was not found in the pagefile and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware.

I suggest you turn off the page file, reboot, turn it back on, reboot. This will delete the pagefile and then create a fresh one.

click start
right click my computer
click properties
click advanced (tab)
under performance click settings
click advanced (tab) under virtual memory click change
tick the "no paging file" radio button, then hit "set" button, then Ok, Ok, Ok
Reboot, then go back and tick "system managed size" radio button, hit "set" , then Ok, Ok, Ok,
Reboot.

Have you defragged the drive lately?

Consider upgrading to 1gb ram.

Thanks for replying Mumbodog
I will try disabling the paging file right away. I have two questions though. Should I turn it back on after rebooting or leave it off? And if I leave it off does that mean my computer will run slower or be unable to run memory-heavy programs?

As for defragmenting the hard drive I have already tried it resulting with no problem-related changes.

Doubling my RAM is something I have considered for a while. Maybe now I will try it as there seems to be nothing to loose with doing so.

Okay, the paging file has been re-activated and re-booting has been done. Now I guess I will just go about with using the comp as usual and wait to see if the problem comes up again. I'll post a response right after it happens next.

The only other thing I can suggest is to determine what brand of hard drive you have and then go to the manufacturers website and download the hard drive diagnostic software and run it.

Happened again as usual.
The hard drive I have is a "ST312002 6AS SCSI Disk Device" Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB (SATA).
I'll go look for the diagnostic software for it and try that as you suggested.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I found the diagnostic software supplied by the hard drives manufacturer and ran it. No problems were found. Then I performed another chkdsk scan which passed. I also ran a reputable spyware removal tool and found nothing.

Problem is still occuring. I am now getting a mix of kernel_stack and kernel_data errors.

Try updating the chipset driver for your motherboard.

Chipset driver has been successfully updated. I also updated the drivers on my video card and processer.

Now to test the comp and see if the error continues...
