Recently reformatted, no sound, drivers installed...
Hello,

Yesterday I reformatted my pc with Windows XP Professional, slipstreamed with SP3. I've reinstalled all of my drivers (save for my webcam), and now I have no sound. It seems everything is in check, my drivers are working and all... but nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks, and if more info is needed, let me know.

Let's start with who made this computer. Is it a bare-bones parts machine?

Ah, sorry, I'm usually better with providing such basic info.

I have a Gateway machine, not custom built or anything. Intel Pentium 4 Processor. 1 gig of ram. Creative SB0090 Audigy Player sound card. As previously stated, I am running Windows XP Professional SP3; can't uninstall SP3 without reformatting again.

I've noticed something weird... when I go into volume control, it lists 'SoundMAX Digital Audio' as my mixer device. Prior to reformatting, it was SB Audigy something or other... which makes sense, considering it is my sound card and all. But it is no longer an item in my dropdown list for audio devices. So I have the drivers installed, yet it's not really seeing the card?

Hope this is enough info. Thanks.

Ahh that make sense. Check you BIOS.
Onboard sound got re-enabled.

If you have a PCI sound card you want to use, check that the onboard sound didn't get re-enabled. It happens from time to time. Usually reseting the bios to defaults, some times, rarely, reinstalling XP will re-enable it.

Check the bios. disable onboard sound.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I gave this a shot... I wasn't quite sure what you meant by disabling on-board sound, but I gave it a quick Google and I believe I did it correctly. SoundMAX Digital Audio is no longer listed in my Sound and Audio Devices.

However, now I have no audio device at all, yet Device Manager is telling me my Creative Audigy Audio Processor is working properly with drivers installed.

I do appoligize for not be clear enough.

Now that we have the onboard sound card out of the way.

Have you tried the simple steps.
- Control Panel <-> Sounds and Audio Devices
Check that the master sound bar is not set to Zero
Click [Advanced] and Make sure that the WAVE Bar is not set to zero.

Do you still have the CD that came with the card?
Did you get the driver from Creative's Web site?

Let's cut all the formalities and solve his problem, okay?

I have a few questions:
1.) Have you tried updating the Chipset drivers for your Motherboard? What it does is it clears all drivers and re-installs any on-board peripherals

Is the SoundCard onboard?

@thesavo: I have no audio device, thus can't do anything with that. The card came with the pc, so no, I do not have the disc. I didn't get the drivers from Creative's site directly, but I know they are correct.

@Made-In-Canada: (I'm female. :P) I'm not quite sure how to do this, so no, I haven't. How would I go about doing it? My motherboard chipset is an Intel Brookdale-G i845GE if that helps.
