Windows XP error 0x0000008e blue screen
When starting my HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop, it goes immediately to the blue screen with error msg: 0x0000008e. Geek Squad says I have virus and wants to charge $130 to clean computer. Is it possible to reboot computer, bypass the blue screen and run virus cleanup (or access internet) and do this on my own? Thanks.

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

Found here http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm click 8E: on the left side

This is usually a driver issue.

Have you tried Safe Mode?

If you get into windows using safe mode, go to C:\Windows\Minidump
Copy the .dmp files in there and zip them up, attach the zip file in your next post using the "Go Advanced" button, then click the paper clip icon to attach the zip.

Thank you. I have copied the .dmp files and hit "send to Compressed (zipped) Folder. (Is this what you meant by "zip them up"?) However, I'm not sure how to "attach the zip file in your next post using the 'Go Advanced' button, then click the paper clip icon to attach the zip."

Are you able to walk me thru this? I am a novice at this and do not have the $ to go see Geek Squad.

I think it is a virus:

The other thing it could be is bad ram, have you added any new ram in the last year?

Scroll down to the bottom of this page, hit the Go Advanced button, a new page will load, now type a message in the empty big white box, and then click the small paper clip icon just above the large white box, a new page or window will open called "Manage Attachments", at the top click "Browse" button, a window will open, then navigate to the compressed file you made, highlight the compressed file and hit the "open" button, then hit the upload button to the right (same window where the 'browse" button was) The file will now be attached to your message. Close the Manage Attachments window, Hit the submit message button.

Thanks
Thanks, Rich-M and Mumbodog. I will try this . . . not sure how it will work as I can only access my laptop in SAFE MODE. I am attempting to retreive this info on my home pc.

I think it is a virus, as I have not added any RAM. I was hoping for a way to bypass the Blue Screen (which it automatically goes to IMMEDIATELY after rebooting) and run a disc with a virus scan on it. Or, to access the internet and run a virus scan there. I have been unable to perform either of the last two scenarios in SAFE MODE. I appreciate your help.

Then unfortunately it is time to seek professional help...
