I am having the exact same problem as in this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...h-problem.html
Unfortunetely, no one seems to have responded to Kevin17

If anyone has any suggestions besides format/reinstall let me know.

Thanks, Jim

Sometimes malware patches critical system files, clean up utilities cannot do anything for these patched files.

Suggest running sfc /scannow from a run command or command prompt, hopefully it will replace the compromised system files.

If the registry is damaged, about all you can do is research each individual problem using Google to find solutions.

Usually easier to re-install clean if there are too many issues related to the registry.

Smile Thanks
Thanks Mumbodog! That was a very fast reply!
I am currently running the sfc /scannow and will post an update when it is complete.

Happy New Year, Jim

Update after running sfc /scannow
Hi Mumbodog,

sfc /scannow did not fix the problem
The computer had several viri that I had cleand off and they had probably killed the registry. Everything I tried was not able to fix the problem

However, I did find out that the HP recovery works very well now. It left all the user data intact and fully accessible

So, I got the system running. Although I had to reinstall some apps, the data associated with the apps was still in the default locations and fully accessible.

Thanks for your help, Jim
